DS scratching his bottom til it bleeds

Any advice? DS scratches the bottom of his back/back of his bottom until it bleeds - and then seems to keep going. I cut his nails twice a week, wash him only with water and change his nappy frequently. He does have sensitive skin - is a red head with v pale skin. Am currently trying E45 cream to stop it itching. But any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Just a thought, does he have threadworms? They can cause horrendous itchiness and cause them to scratch terribly. My 3 have just had a dose, they can pick them up usually at school/nursery or tots groups, really common and easily treatable....sorry no other ideas for helping although i am sure someone will be along soon.

How old is your DS. My DD (16 months) has been like this for a while now. It seemed to conincide with when we moved house (when she was 10 months) to a home that has a water softener and I thought that might be the cause. I've turned that off now and shee seems to scratch a bit less but sometimes she still has a real go.

She doesn't seem to itch when she's dressed though - only when she undressed.

My dd came out in a horrible rash on the bottom of her back (just the bit that would be touching her changing mat if her nappy was off and her vest was folded up underneath her IYSWIM?).

After checking everything at home I realized it was the cleaning stuff they used at nursery to clean the mats.

They have changed it now and she's fine. Had to get cream from the doctors to clear it up but she's fine now.

It was Asda surface cleanser BTW. We use Dettol occasionally or just wipe the mat with a baby wipe.

Thanks. H: cleaning fluids is a good point and I hadn't thought of that. The E45 is sort of working - he's scratching a bit less and the other scratches are healing. I think a mixture of all the suggestions is the way forward. And thanks for the warning about nurseries, DS is about to start for 2 days a week and I wasn't going to say anything but I think I will now. All your comments much appreciated and thanks again!

Sorry worms for def put money on it pop into chemist get dose of vermox (can get OTC) and treat ASAP and if it isn't won't do any harm!

Sounds like threadworms to me too! My DS2 had them when he was still in nappies & the itching drove him mad.
You can get treatment from the chemist & it is advised you treat the whole family.
