Hello gals, have my mum visiting to help(?) for 5 weeks. She insists that my newborn boy of 2 weeks poos far too often & that his poo is too runny. She's starting to worry/irritate me now, what should newborn poo look like & how often should they poo per day?? Please help!

yes she'd be irritating me as well

sounds totally normal

newborn poo is runny because its from milk .. and it tends to the yellow tinges

what goes in comes out

Chugnuts · 04/06/2007 13:01

It sounds very normal to me. Mine at that age had mustardy coloured poos several times a day.

mammyjo · 04/06/2007 13:05

Totally normal as far as I know. My dd is almost 10 weeks old and still has yellowy coloured often runny poo. Is your baby breastfed or formula? I know that breastfed babies tend to have runnier poo. Dd used to poo at every single feed, even now she goes at least 4 times daily.

totally normal

indiasmum · 04/06/2007 13:06

totally and utterly normal. esp bf babies. ff babies tend to have greener more solid poo IME.

dont worry about it. there isnt anything wrong with your ds.
give your mum a kick from me!

SockPuppetOfDeath · 04/06/2007 13:06

Yellowyish and runny, like grain mustard? Totally normal.

Ignore your mum (although I'm sure she's trying to be 'helpful'). New babies eat, sleep and poo and that's about it

lilymolly · 04/06/2007 13:11

another "normal" vote from me too, esp if you are breast feeding

phdlife · 04/06/2007 13:16

just be warned - when its liquid and frequent it may sometimes come out in explosions - disastrous if the nappy is off

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/06/2007 13:18

The thing about breastfed baby poo is that pretty much anything goes. My dd seemed to poo constantly, and I believed (from threads such as these) that this was perfectly normal. It did turn out, however, to be caused by the fact that she is milk intolerant (dairy was passing through me into my breast milk), and the poos decreased once I cut out dairy when she was 16 weeks.

It's probably perfectly fine, but just wanted to offer another perspective.

Thanks ladies!!! Phdlife, had an "explosion" episode on the weekend, all over my pj's!!
Cantsleepwontsleep - will give soya a try, have heard about dairy going through to baby.

DS is breast fed, thanks again ladies!!

Ha ha, Snowi! Our first one was 1.5m across the bedroom. He got me, the moses basket stand, the wall and the floor. And scared his dad half to death!
