Any opticians about..care to tell me what my prescription means?

Well, I have no real idea, but mine are
left - -3.50, -1.25x180
right - -2.75, -0.75x010 and I'm pretty shortsighted (can't drive or read or anything really without my lenses or glasses)

As your bad eye is a + I'd presume you've got one really long sighted eye, and one that's reasonably normal. Also my left eye which has similar Cyl/axis values has an astigmatism, don't know whether those figures show that though. Hopefully kiminutter can tell you exactly

Do you walk into door frames without your glasses misdee? I find that I misjudge them just enough to slam my little toes into them as I walk past (when I haven't got my lenses in that is) Before I got contacts, and when I was too vain to wear my glasses around the house, my little toes were always broken because I'd smash them into the frames so often. Could never catch balls either

Should say that wasn't just because I couldn't see, but because my vision is so different between my left and right eye.

yes, i walk into things a lot. the perscription isnt as strong as other peoples, but the difference is enough to make me feel quesey.

cant find the perscription sheet atm. it was about yesteday.

dh and dd3 lenses are really thick.

eek, my prescriptions is -8.00 in one eye and -8.50 in the other - I'm unbeleiveably short sighted AND have astigmatism .

SV, most people have astigmatism, it's quite common. Just means your eyeballs aren't a perfectly regular shape.

major difference is the axis.

I used to work in an opticians before having kids and if I remember rightly you have an Anisometropie which is when the two eyes atleast a 2dioptrine difference. Usually we had to try and get the customer to go for a very small frame or contact lenses for the best results.
Cyl if I remember rightly has something to do with the shape or curve of your eyeball and the Axis is to tell the optician where to turn the glass/lenses to even out the curve of the eye when he fixes them into the frame.
Sorry can't explain so well as I did it all in German and dropped it all when I left.

Blimey SV, you've got bad eyes! My stepDad has a prescription like yours and his glasses were like the bottom of milk bottles before he started paying for these mega expensive but thin posh lenses. he does tend to wear contacts most of the time now too.

that sounds scary!!! i have a longsighted eye and a shortsighed eye, i know that much !!

According to my prescription I'm -13.75 in right eye & -12.5 in the left eye. That's from a 1993 prescription & I know my eyes have got worse since then, I just don't have a copy of my most recent prescription!?

I think Bobsyoruncle wins the "worst eyes" compatition! Trouble with astigmatism is that I won't be able to wear these (relatively cheap) contacts for more than a couple of years - if I want more, it'll have to be the expensive ones. And I don't like wearing my glasses if it's raining (they get wet) or sunny (can't wear singlasses on top of them) or cold (steam up when you come inside). Which rules out most days really .

Oh the optician (opthamologist) explained all this to 10yo DD last week as her scrip had changed.

The +/- figure is whether you are long (+) or short (-) and by how much.

The middle figure describes the astigmatism (mis-shaping of eyeball, rugby ball shaped rather than round) and the final figure is how that ball is orientated so it's an umber of degrees.

That was the explanation given to a 10yo so I hope it makes sense!

I have to wear gas permeable lenses which are expensive but I find them great. Only wear glasses in the house - VERY thick - and have been known to whip them off when the door goes!? The problem is I then don't recognise my own mother or alternatively greet people selling double glazing like dear friends...

I have special contacts that correct my astigmatism, but they are pricey (I pay £27pm for lenses, solutions and check ups) I'm really should shop around and find somewhere cheaper, but I'm comfortable with my optician.

I had a pair of contact lenses with a tiny blue dot on to show which way I had to put them in (dot at the top) couldn't see properly with normal ones.
I'd have an operation if I could aford it, winter and rain is a problem and in summer I have to pay a fortune for sun glasses with my strength in.

My eyes are about 8-50 and 875 ish and i get free eyes tests because of this do you? its only on the last couple that i have but free is good.

I wear gas permeable lenses - have done for > 20 years! - but they are a load cheaper than my DD's soft lenses which have to be thrown away every day. Mine last 2-3 years for about £120-140, with solutions costing a fraction of DD's c/lens bill. Just seems a lot to shell out at one time (esp since glasses need new scrip at the same time).

However, now I am old and wise:

• I have basic lenses in my glasses, no coating.

• I always re-use the previous frames.

• I buy solutions from my optician as I get a customer discount and I buy the discounted packs when I can
