Is it really Glandular Fever?

I've felt under the weather for 3 months- been to the GP 4 times and had a couple of courses of antibiotics. Basically, my symptons have been a hacking dry cough, temperature and a general feeling of real weariness. After some nagging, I had a blood test last week and the results show that I have "borderline G. F.". I haven't had a sore throat or swollen glands at all during this time so was somewhat surprised by this result. I was told the results over the phone and didn't think quickly enough to ask for more details........ so I wondered if any of you had any experience of this or could shed any light on this diagnosis? (I've been told to have another blood test in 2 weeks.) Many thanks.

Well, I had glandular fever at about 17 or 18, and it was really horrible, the sore throat was beyond anything I could have imagined, swallowed was so painful I had to stop doing it, and spent a couple of days spitting into the toilet before the doctor said that if I didn't start drinking they would admit me to the hospital and put me on a drip.

Th fever I had with had me hallucinating one night, and the acute stage of GF was generally horrible for about 3 weeks to a month. After antibiotics and strong painkillers I began to slowly feel better but the weariness and weakness lasted for well over a year, accompanied by lousy depression.

The symptoms you've experienced do sound like GF, lucky you if you've escaped the sore throat! If it is GF you might be feeling this way for a while, I suggest you get more info from your doctor, especially if you're trying to work or have kids to look after.

Here's hoping you feel better soon!

Ohh I think I could have GF at the moment but not sure if I'm being dramatic or should go to the docs tomorrow. My symptoms are headache, fever/shivers, coldsore (but that could be the little buggers taking advantage of my weakened state!), glands up, bit of a cough and sore throat like I've swallowed razor blades. Been really hungry/thirsty because I didn't eat or drink at all yesterday and forced myself today. But took some ibruprofen and its helped loads (as long as I take the next dose as soon as I can. Should I go get a blood test or is this just a bug?

PS Doglover - sorry for the hijack but I didn't think there was any oint starting a new thread off about GF. Hope you don't mind.

I think if you're feeling that bad haribo you should definitely see your doctor, as when I had GF my friend also got it off me (we shared a drink) and hers deveoped into quinsy and she had to go to hospital. To be honest you'll have to see the doctor anyway if it is GF, it's that bad, and you may need a sick note.

Hope you're both ok!

Haribosmum · 03/06/2007 21:26

Nah won't need a sick note, i don't work. But only for 5 more weeks. Boo Hoo! Oh,unless I can get a sicknote so I don't have to look after my boys?! LOL.

Maybe I'm just being dramatic then. It's just this sore throat. I've never had it so bad so long (without the ibruprofen). Maybe I'll see how I feel in the morning and if I'm ok or feeling much better then I guess it wasn't GF!

I went to the doctors this morning and he said I had toncillitus (sp?) so he have given me some ABs

bananabump · 04/06/2007 22:06

That's good news then! Hope you feel better soon.
