DS (5) started with a couple of spots on Thursday, and it's now Sunday and more are still erupting all over him. How long does it take for them all to come out, and how long does the itchiness last? We are doing the Piriton/eurax/calamine cream/ bicarb/porridge baths but the itching is upsetting him.....at least it's one down, two to go, the others will be next

It's probably at it's peak now, and hopefully you'll notice an improvement by tomorrow.

My dd developed it on a thursday, the weekend was the worst, monday better and she was back to nursery by the wednesday.

mckenzie · 03/06/2007 10:21

I just came on to post a question about chicken pox and suntan cream. DD started friday night and is now covered in spots that have not yet blistered. Do you think it's okay to use suntan cream on her?

flightattendant · 03/06/2007 10:24

I wouldn't...it might soften up the blisters so they take longer to scab, make a bit of a mess...

no experience but just a feeling.

Try to keep her mainly out of the sun though as you obviously wouldn't want her to burn!

(running around naked in moderation is probably very helpful though)

mckenzie · 03/06/2007 17:29

thanks flightattendant. Dh had put some one her today (while I was posting the message ) and it doesn't seem to have made any difference to them so far. DD herself is sti;ll fine and not complaining about them at all (fingers crossed ti stays that way)
I think tomorrow though I'll just keep her in a thin long sleeved top and stay inside in the heat of the day so that i don't need to use suncream again.

jellyjelly · 03/06/2007 17:35

mackenzie i am not sure if you should be sunbathing too much something to do with tanning and scarring. Anyone else can help?

Rubyslippers · 03/06/2007 17:38

can;t help with the sunbathing question but i would get some piriton to help with the itching
DS's spots hit their peak on day 3 BTW

mankyscotslass · 03/06/2007 18:00

Thanks...he is really miserable and clingy "mummy why are you calling me a klingon". Loads more spots this afternoon, been in the bath too, but with a 3 year old and an 19 mths old running around cant leave him in there for hours...poor wee soul hope he is better later. God help me when dd gets it, she is a drama queen to start with and cries at the drop of a hat normally!

Can I ask a q re the pox? When the spots are out is it still contagious?

belgo · 03/06/2007 18:34

the chicken pox remains contagious until five days after the first spots appear. It is also contagious the day before the spots appear, so 6 days in total.

mckenzie · 03/06/2007 20:18

mankyscotslass, it doesn't bode well for my DD if your poor DS has got even more new spots today. I've given her some piriton tonight as she was very unsettled at bedtime (not like her at all) and I've noticed her rubbing her skin quite a lot this afternoon. She's covered in it already it seems so not sure where any new spots will go but I'm sure they'll find a spare inch.

jellyjelly, she's only 2 so she wasn't sunbathing, just playing in the garden (I did have a chuckle to myself when i pictured DD lying on a sunlounger reading her Cosmo with a glass of Pimms by her side ). I put the sand pit and water table in the shade but she's still in the sun for some of the time, it couldn't be helped.
I did shower her tonight to wash all the suntan lotion off and she wasn't very happy about that even though I was a gentle as I could be. I won't use it tomorrow though, just keep her covered up instead.

scootermum · 03/06/2007 20:32

Thanks!

mankyscotslass · 04/06/2007 07:55

Mckenzie, more have come up overnight, and he has a nasty cough. Keeping my eye on that as I know chest infections can be a complication, although he has been coughing recently anyway due to the pollen that's about. He has it worst on his face, head, neck and back, his chest is nearly as bad. It's awful cos he has really pale skin and marks very easily (picture milk bottle white) I can see he will look bad for months. At least he has got it out of the way before school goes back, he may manage one half term with no time off. Does anyone know if giving piriton too early can make the spots slow to come out? I seem to remember something about this but can't find it.
Mckenzie, hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

how's your DS today mankyscotslass?
DD had a terrible night. She has spots on her vulva and vagina area and is finding those the most painful and itchy it seems (she says her nappy hurts but isn't wearing one so I think it's time I taught her the proper names for her bits huh?).

mckenzie · 04/06/2007 08:20

cross posts! Time difference is because i typed it but got delayed in sending.

Our two aren't doing very well huh? Do hope your DS's cough doesn't cause him even moe distress.

mankyscotslass · 04/06/2007 08:23

Aw poor mckenzie dd! one of my friends dd had this, the only thing that helped was the bicarb/porridge oats bath, and letting her wee in it. Dreading my DD getting this, she is sooo mardy anyway. Ds is still hangy and weepy and very spotty/itchy and miserable.

OP posts:
mckenzie · 04/06/2007 09:05

so what do i put in the bath? porridge oats wrapped in a muslin is that right? and bicard of soda at the same time or separately?

mankyscotslass · 04/06/2007 09:14

I think they did the porridge oats in tights or muslins and large helpings of bicarb at the saem time....with Ds I have alternated it, and i ran out of muslins so used some tights over the taps!! He did seem to relax in the bath, dont know if it was the bicarb or porridge oats or if it was the distraction...he spent an hour in the bath yesterday just playing, and i let him air dry so no towels

OP posts:
mckenzie · 04/06/2007 09:30

I shall try that later as DD loves a bath.
In case you are interested, I just found this when I was searching for homeopathic remedies...

Remedy - Ant tart.
When to use - Large blisters. Child doesn't want to be left alone. Accompanied by a coarse rattling cough.

You mentioned that your DS had a cough so thought it might be worth trying.

mankyscotslass · 04/06/2007 09:40

Thanks, mum is going into town today so i will get her to have a look. Hope the bath works its magic for you! it really is a horrible illness, i hate seeing the kids upset, and i know with the other two bound to get it my life will be hell for the next month! I am clinging to the hope that the 19mth old is still Bf, although only once a day, and he might take it a bit lighter.....but it is only a faint hope!

I gave DD a dose of Rhus Tox this morning (as recommend by the same website that I quoted to you for the cough mankyscotslass)and suddenly after lunch she was bouncing around like her old self! She's asleep now thank goodness and I'll be dosing her up with more of the same later in case it is doing the trick.
How's your DS this afternoon?

mankyscotslass · 04/06/2007 14:25

Still itchy, been in that bath and a bit weepy. Going to bake fairy cakes today with them and distract him. think i will get the rhustox for the next ones though...pretty sure ds is on the mend, tomorrow should see a big improvemtn (i hope). Glad your lo is a bit better, it'a awful to see them miserable.

flibbertyjibbet · 04/06/2007 14:45

I've just had both mine, 12m and 2 1/2yo through cpox. DS2 came out with all the spots virtually on one day but DS2 had had 3 lots of a few spots every 5 days for nearly 2 weeks before he got absolutely covered head to toe and they kept coming out for about 3 days. So every child is different with it.

On the subject of contagiousness, they can spread the chicken pox virus before the spots came out, but you have too keep them off nursery or out of contact with other children for 5 days after the spots first appear - or until they are all scabbed over, as touching the weeping sores or touching things that someone with the itchy weeping spots may have touched can pass some skin disease that I forget the name of.
Both of them had 3 really bad nights and then on the 4th morning after the spots started appearing were more or less back to their normal lively little selves.

mckenzie · 04/06/2007 17:16

I dont envy you flibbertyjibbet but at least now it's done and dusted and you wont have to worry next time an outbreak occurs huh? Hope your two are well and fully recovered now.
My DD woke from her sleep a different child to the jolly one I was talking about earlier on this morning. It's a good job my DM has been here as she has been attached to either DM or me all afternoon. Early night me thinks for both of us.

flibbertyjibbet · 04/06/2007 18:48

Yes thats what I kept telling myself whilst dabbing calomine lotion up a childs bum hole at 4am... its all over and done with now!

mckenzie · 04/06/2007 20:05

oh heck, what's going to happen now? DD was so uncomfortable tonight with her bedtime nappy on that I've taken it off her and thankfully she is now asleep. Only trouble is she has only been out of nappies for less than 3 weeks and I really don't think she is ready to go the whole night long. I do have a protective sheet on the bed but I only have one of those and only one spare fitted sheet.
Could be fun later on huh?
