DS (5) started with a couple of spots on Thursday, and it's now Sunday and more are still erupting all over him. How long does it take for them all to come out, and how long does the itchiness last? We are doing the Piriton/eurax/calamine cream/ bicarb/porridge baths but the itching is upsetting him.....at least it's one down, two to go, the others will be next

mckenzie, thats another reason I am dreading this....nappies...dd 3 is out of them, but youngest ds is 19 mths.....eeeek...I have read these are the worst. I think when he gets it I will let him run around naked in the day and see what happens. Your poor dd, I hope she is better tomorrow. Eldest ds now seems more like himself, says not so itchy, just "rubby"
taken from Thursday to get to this point though...and he had gone to bed with no piriton or calamine

Mckenzie, how are things today? Ds is much better, still prone to crying at the drop of a hat or the word "no". (well after 5 days I think i have seen enough Lazytown to last a life time). But not itching as much at all...no lotion or medicine since yesterday! so on the up. Just as well he is iff on holiday though, there is no way on this earth he is fit for school....

morning mankyscotslass - really glad to hear your DS is well on the mend.
DD didn't wet the bed last night but that's because we were up so often in the night and so used the toilet at every opportunity instead (her wish). Bless her, she also woke up with one of her eyes stuck shut and so we've just got back from the doctors with antibiotics (her spots are infected) and eye drops too. The chicken pox hasn't gone into her eye thank goodness but she's just got a secondary infection. She had an appointment on monday at the eye hospital as they are going to operate to unblock her tear ducts but obviously we had to cancel that because of the chicken pox. One thing after another huh?

Re the nappy business, it might be a blessing in disguise and your 19 month old might be the earliest DC to be toilet trained as a side effect of the chicken pox . Stranger things have happened huh?

dramaqueen · 05/06/2007 10:18

Get some of those pamapers care mats, then you can just whip them out from under her when she has done a wee.

mankyscotslass · 05/06/2007 10:21

Sorry to hear you had a rough night. Her eye sounds uncomfortable, poor wee thing. Eye wise we have been ok, just one on one upper lid, and one in the corner of his eye and another right on the edge of his lower lid. Have you managed to rearrange the hospital appointment?
it's funny you mention the potty training for youngest manky, mum has been on at me for months to start him off.....so you never know....althouh he does think the potty makes a fetching hat! Hope things improve for you today.

Her poor eye looks absolutely awful just now as the doctor put a drop of dye in it to see if it was infected and the dye plus the gungy stuff are coming out together so the whole eye area is red and swollen and then she has the yukky mustard and orange coloured gunk coming out of it
Thankfully she is sleeping peacefully just now and I think I might go and lie down too. How did I ever cope when i had a newborn? Two nights of badly disturbed sleep and I'm fit for nothing!

Thanks for the tip dramaqueen - I'll try and get some later today.

Hope DS is still doing okay Mankyscotslass.

mankyscotslass · 05/06/2007 13:02

Ds is ok, but on closer inspection he has scratched at a couple of spots, on his body not face thankfully, and they look a bit red round them....will keep an eye on it, may need some cream from the doc, or i wonder if the chemist will give us something? anyway, will see how it goes tomorrow, it could just be the healing process as the ones which are bad were the largest spots....good idea on the nap, wish I could have one too!!

OP posts:
mckenzie · 05/06/2007 14:26

if it makes you feel any better, I didn't get one! The phone didn't stop ringing and then a close neighbour decided to get his chainsaw out and cut up some logs (or at least i assume that's what he was doing )

Early night for me instead i think.

I seem to remember someone posting on here about a cream to help the scars but sorry to say I cant remember who it was or what the cream was called.
The homeoapthic website that i sued yesterday recommened giving calendular after teh chicken pox is over to help with scarring.

mankyscotslass · 05/06/2007 14:34

OOh, i think i have some of that in the medicine box, i think i will go look. At the moment he is baking a banana cake with his grandma, giving me 5 minutes peace...apart from youngest manky trying to climb my leg!! thanks for the tip!
Sorry you didn't get that nap, it's early night in this house tonight too!

OP posts:
mckenzie · 06/06/2007 08:52

how are things in your house this morning mankyscotslass?
I'm very pleased to say that I think DD is over the worst now - see slept soundly all night and has been in a much cheerier disposition this morning. Hooray!
Her eye looks much better too (had to call the doctors late yesterday afternoon as it was swollen, bright red and weeping very yucky mustard stuff but he assured me this was a good sign)

mankyscotslass · 06/06/2007 08:59

Oh, that's good news Mckenzie! Ds is a lot bettr, he slept until 8 this morning (unheard of, usually a 6.30 riser) and seems a happy chappy....may brave the library later as he is now housemad! He did have a spot in his ear that looked a bit pus filled, but it has shrunk overnight so i am not worried now. Hopefully your dd's eye will be loads better soon.
Just playing a waiting game now for the 3 yrs old and 19mth old.....with my luck they will come down at the weekend justbefore eldest starts school, and i am going to be stuffed for the school run as i will have to take them with me.....argh...

OP posts:
mckenzie · 08/06/2007 18:32

how's your DS mankyscotlass? I hope he's fully recovered now. DD's spot have all scabbed over and she looks more like a dot to dot puzzle now. She is though still being very whingy, clingy and all together a PITA.
Have you found this with your DS or has he reverted to normall now?

mankyscotslass · 08/06/2007 18:41

Glad your dd seems to be on the mend! Yup ds is a right royal pita. Very easy to cry at the moment. BUT I can hardly believe it, he has come out in 3 more spots this evening, the rest have all scabbed over, so I never expected this! Proper blistery ones too Having a nightmare trying to stop him scratching the scabs on his face.....youngest manky has been a royal pita the last two days too, hoping its teeth but not so sure...middle manky showing no signs so far!

OP posts:
mckenzie · 08/06/2007 19:57

oh heck manky, I do hope he's not going to get a whole lot more. How can that happen? I shall be inspecting DD in the morning. I was only saying tonight to DH how DD is behaving how she was before the spots appeared!

mankyscotslass · 08/06/2007 21:03

I know, i didnt expect it at all. Dh has just come home from work and said a bloke he works with got spots coming out for 2 weeks after he had it...argh!I never heard of it happening like this, but they are definetly chicken pox spots, poor wee thing.
Glad your dd is back to normal though, makes life easier!

OP posts:
allieBongo · 08/06/2007 21:11

can i join in, my poor dd has the worst pox. she has just got out of hospital after a nasty chest infection she looks horrendous as she also has eczema. what else can i try other than calamine and piriton. she is 2yo. the first spot appeared weds evening and now she looks like this

mankyscotslass · 08/06/2007 21:23

Aw. AB, poor wee baby. Ds wasnt so bad on his front, its was his back, face, neck and head. I know eurax is supposed to help with the spots, but i am not sure of the age limits on that. Mckenzie had some good results with rhus tox herbal remedy, i think. Also long cool baths, with bicarb of soda or porridge oats seemed to help ds, or at least distract him. Piriton seemed to help for a while. He was more like himself by day 4 but is still not 100% normal. I still have 2 more mankys to be infected so will be around here on and off for a while i think.
Hope the wee bairn is better soon....

OP posts:
allieBongo · 08/06/2007 21:27

cheers love. where can i buy the rhus tox? luckily, ds had it before dd borm, so will only have 1 spell. what a nightmare for you

mankyscotslass · 08/06/2007 21:30

Most health food shops i think, and i think maybe some of the bigger boots with a good homeopathic section.....
on the plud side for me DS got it in the holidays, so at least he wont miss more school....he had actually for the first time since he started not been absent for a day inthe last half term!
Middle manky is 3, youngest 19mths.....oh joy

OP posts:
mckenzie · 09/06/2007 08:08

sorry to hear about your DD alliebongo. As your DD also has excema it would probably be worth while getting an appointment with a registered homeopath to get a specific remedy for your daughter. Rhus tox is a general remedy suitable for most chicken pox cases but if you've got the time/money to visit a homeopath you should get better results.
Good luck.

lovedandadored · 09/06/2007 09:39

hope it's ok to ask a question myself about c.pox and what it would be like for an adult male to get it. my 4 year old dd has not had cpox yet but it has been going around her preschool - my dh is worried though as he never had c.pox as a child. he is 1 of 8 though and all of his siblings have had it so he was exposed to it as a child - just didn't catch it (unless you can have it without spots??) thanks

mankyscotslass · 09/06/2007 09:43

THe bloke in DH's work has just come back after having chicken pox...he was off for 4 weeks and is still not 100%, spots took 2 full weeks to come out. He still tires easily...it can be nasty in adults. There is a test that you can get at gp's to check for immunity, but most are reluctant to do this unless preg woman/immuno suppressed. DH had the test as he is on methotrexate and is immuno suppressed as a result. I think it is possible to be naturally immune or to have it so mildly you dint have spots....Hope your dh is going to be ok!

OP posts:
lovedandadored · 09/06/2007 09:48

thanks mankscotslass - i really hope he is immune to it! - had no idea about a test - could be worth him asking the gp and see what he says!

mckenzie · 10/06/2007 19:57

how's your DS doing mankyscotslass with his second lot of spots. I notice a couple fo red spots on DD's legs tonight as she was getting out of the bath. I'm hoping hopinh hoping that they are bites from being at the park today and not more chicken pox!
I happened to bump into our GP on saturday who had seen her at the beginning of the week when she was very bad and covered in blisters etc and he commented on how quickly he thinks they have healed over. maybe it was the Rhus Tox - who knows huh?

mankyscotslass · 10/06/2007 21:41

Oh, i hope it is just bites! Ds is okish, still has soime that are scabbed over, not cleared yet, probably because despite everyting he did scratch. Hoping they fall off in the next few days! Meanwhile middle manky is snoty and little manky has a couple of suspicious spots after being snotty....i see a long week ahead....
