Ds shut the door over his big toe today. He has broken his nail/bloody and cracked and bruised and grazed the acual toe and all bruised at the base of the nail. I did cold water then elevation. I dressed itwith a bit of germolene (for local antheastic), plaster and this special gause for finger/toe dressings. I also gave him nurofen to aid with pain at the time and also before bed. He cant bear wieght on it as too painful. Anyone had this and did i do right or should i take him to dr?

hi, not to toe but my finger, caught it in door!
You did the right thing. Make sure dressing not to tight to allow for any swelling that may occur overnight. It is possible he may have broken it - not a complete fracture but a chip from the bone. Painful definately but more so if he's chipped the part that his extensor tendon is attached to meaning muscular movement 'moves' the loose chip - not nice

If he has, theres not much other than splinting that can be done but (sorry, don't know how old he is) if bones still growing he should probably see a doc and have x-ray to make sure he doesn't form a bone callous preventing future movement.

Quite possible he's just badly bruised it but if he still can't weight-bear by tomorrow avo, I'd have it checked.

That all sounds very scary, don't mean it to be, just a 'safe than sorry' kinda thing. I'm known RL to be a bit neurotic

Well, hows the patient today? Any better?

MamaMaiasaura · 02/06/2007 17:42

Thanks for your reply

Looked worse when removed dressing. Base of toe all sore/open and very painful, also bled through dressing. Took him to walk in. They dont think he has a bony injury as he managed to play in a park for an hour today (afterwards it started bleeding so perhaps more rest required!). Dressed it again, to see how it goes. If he is still hobbling tomorrow to think about A&E. He is putting some weight on it at times tho, but not cosistently. He also just stubbed it again poor love. not splinted, just a idione dressing with soft dressing ontop. He managed to sleep and pain didnt wak him so pretty sure he will be fine.
