Bleeding after birth - how long for?

sponge · 17/08/2004 19:21

By days 7 and 8 my bleeding had really eased off but since then has been back with a vengeance. Now day 13 and still as much as a period.
I'm pretty sure there's no infection - no bad smell or temperature etc - but I would like to know there's an end in sight as I'm finding it quite depressing and it makes me feel not quite clean IYKWIM.
Anyone esle go on this long and then stop soon after?

I bled for 4 weeks with both of mine. Which I believe is normal.

MummyToSteven · 17/08/2004 19:24

I think anything up to six months is normal. I think if it tails off then starts going heavy again its a sign you are overdoing it a bit- anyway you could get some help with household stuff etc?

MummyToSteven · 17/08/2004 19:24

ooops - I meant anything up to six weeks!!

sponge · 17/08/2004 19:51

Thanks. I'll just have to put up with it a while longer I guess. Sigh.............

My bleeding stopped completely after 2 weeks then came back again 2 weeks later. It lasted for 2 more weeks after that. HTH>

coppertop · 17/08/2004 20:13

6 weeks exactly for both pregnancies - and then a period a couple of days later.

hermykne · 17/08/2004 20:37

my midwife told me usually 21 days.

sportyspice · 17/08/2004 20:43

bled for 4 weeks and then period after 6!!

tangerinecath · 17/08/2004 22:57

My bleeding stopped and started after the first couple of weeks until about 5.5 weeks. I know what you mean about feeling "not quite clean" - and I'm now at 6.5 weeks and am paranoid that it'll start again while I'm out and about !

sponge · 18/08/2004 10:17

It's a pain what we have to put up with isn't it?
I have gone down to "normal" pads but I think I might have to go back up to the super dooper absorbant ones as the bleeding is still quite heavy and the only couple of pairs of trousers I can get into are pale coloured so can't risk any leaks .
Just another thing to add to the "it will get better soon" list.

I bled for 13 weeks - but that makes me a freak (trust me - read a lot about it ). The standard line is that it should be over by 6 week check. If it comes back bright again try to take ot easier. You seem to know to watch for smell etc. and clots bigger than a small plum (is that too much information now ).

albert · 18/08/2004 18:45

Kif, you're not a freak - I did too!

stripey · 18/08/2004 18:53

Pretty sure it was about 3 months with ds1 but less with ds2 I think

honeybunny · 18/08/2004 18:53

I think around 4-5weeks for 2xpg and 6weeks for first but had retained products, infection and needed ERPC under GA. The bleeding turned a bit heavier with some small clots after about 3-4weeks and a bit smelly around week5/6. Hence the surgery. Keep an eye on it, but day 13 is early as yet.

fruitful · 18/08/2004 19:19

Oh blimey. So there are advantages to caesareans then. I think I used Always Ultra for the first week and panty liners for the second week and that was that! They must have done a pretty good hoover while they were in there .

discoinferno · 18/08/2004 19:23

I had a c\s and mine was as below.

honeybunny · 18/08/2004 19:34

I had 2CSs, fruitful....still bled tho!! .

Linnet · 19/08/2004 00:02

I bled for 6/7 weeks this time. It stopped after I'd stopped breastfeeding. Can't remember how long the first time but I breastfed for longer the first time and I stopped bleeding before I finished b/feeding.

harrassedmum · 19/08/2004 00:09

Can be a sign of over doing it, but if it continues mention it to doctor cos mine kept going and it turns out i had inflamed ovaries. Not serious i dont think, but best to be checked out, take care

sibble · 19/08/2004 04:17

hi sponge, similar story, am day 11 now and bleeding has increased over last day or two having reduced to virtually nothing. my midwife fore-warned me that there is usually an increase in bleeding between days 10-14 , especially after a c/s, as internally another phase of healing starts. as long as there is no smell or temperature everything should be fine (nice!!!)
