Was asked today if vaccinations caused my son’s health issues

Today I went to a specialist playgroup with my son. One of them has complex health needs although we are still in the process of establishing what they are, waiting on results and appointments etc.

I was explaining to another Mum about what we know so far, and how he had a big skills regression at 18 months. She immediately said it was probably his vaccinations and they’ve probably caused brain damage because it “happens all the time”.

At the time I just said no, absolutely not - it happened six months after any jabs, his health issues started before birth, they’ve already found structural abormalities that would have been present before birth and they’re looking for more issues with his brain.

I find this even harder because he contracted whooping cough in nicu and was extremely sick.

I don’t know why it’s upset me so much because I don’t believe there’s any connection with vaccines but I can’t get it out of my mind. Why do I feel so bad when I am so violently opposed to anti-vax rhetoric?

What a vile thing for her to say, and well done you for pushing back on her.

SinkGirl · 24/07/2018 21:58

Thank you. It’s just shaken me a bit I guess. I don’t know anyone in real life who thinks this way, of course it’s run through my mind at some point along with every other possibility.

What a ridiculous and nasty thing for her to say. You probably feel so bad because your irrational brain is linking the two things due to what she said and previous (totally irresponsible) links that have been made in the past press. So you have s tiny inkling of 'what if'. Once a link has been made it is difficult to unlink IYSWIM. Rationally you know it is nothing to do with vaccines and far more damage is caused by people not vaccinating their children.

Thanks Sorry some ignorant idiot made you feel like this.

SinkGirl · 24/07/2018 22:12

Thank you. I do know that - he was absolutely fine for months after all his vaccinations, only issues were pre-existing, and then other things that came months later... and yet it has triggered some strange feeling of guilt even though I know logically I haven’t caused this.

I don’t think she was trying to be nasty, but it has really bothered me.

Not intentionally nasty, probably thought she was meaning well... but is a nasty thing to say because of the implications. I hope you get the answers you need from tests etc soon.

You're absolutely right! Vaccinations don't negatively affect children at all!

There's a lot of rumours and myths that float around childhood vaccinations, and we debunked a few of them on my blog if you want to find out more Smile

OP just ignore people like this, there are far too many unpleasant individuals who want to make others feel bad. I usually tell them where to go, and not anywhere as politely as you.

THEsonofaBITCH · 26/07/2018 14:57

Just know that there have been MANY studies done due to mis-information about vaccines and ALL have found no causation of any issues due to vaccination (over and above the same of any medical intervention i.e muscle soreness from getting a needle inserted, etc which I only point out because some wise-ass will say there are too issues).

shewolfmum · 28/07/2018 23:42

What? Why do you think there is a vaccine injury compensation scheme THEsonofa?

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 28/07/2018 23:52

My husband went to the barbers today and the women cutting his hair told him that the reason our dd has autism is because of vaccinations we gave her and how they should be banned. Angry According to her the government are secretly trying to hide the fact that we are all poisoning our children. She went on to say the feeding children green vegetables cures autism Confused
I would of walked out had it been me she’d been talking to, dh is too polite for his own good unfortunately.

mumsastudent · 29/07/2018 00:20

(sound of my head banging against brick wall) I have done serious academic research into this back ground of Autism - bluntly I could write a well researched essay with references as to why the anti vaxes are using faulty research & ignoring simple facts. First, my adult dc was not given triple because it was used by the NHS when she was that age. 2nd the "apparent" rise in diagnosis has halted/slowed down. Why? because the rise was caused by several factors relating to methods of diagnosis ie it wasn't until after the 1980 that HF autism/ Aspergers was considered to be autism, previously Kanner's Syndrome the more severe end of ASD was only recognized, that until 2009/2010 adult autism was left undiagnosed but the Autism Act in the UK & similar Acts in other countries increased understanding & gave families the right & opportunity for diagnosis, (read about Lorna Wing's research) & the DSM 4 put Aspergers as a diagnosis - hence world wide recognition. Additionally the special education system USA & UK other countries had easier(! not easy) access to sen via Learning Disability. Lastly it is linked to children being sent to institutions and never diagnosed - the opening of institutions led to people needing diagnosis for support. Hence de institutionalization led to increase - sorry if I gone off on one but it drives be bonkers - false facts and making parents feel guilty - of course you all realize we are bad parents (grinding teeth) OP this idiot is not only ignorant, shes spreading dangerous ideas & most of all she is cruel. (sending hug)

Payouts there are....

KatharinaRosalie · 29/07/2018 15:54

Not surprised. Anti-vaxxers are vultures and often targeting parents who have lost their children, telling them it's because of vaccinations. No matter what the actual cause is, according to them everything on this earth is a vaccine injury.

THEsonofaBITCH · 29/07/2018 16:35

Vaccine payouts are insurance against idiots in the main. The other payouts are due to complications with vaccine application not the vaccine, i.e. allergic reactions to the vaccine ingredients, nerve damage from the needles, etc. If someone dies in emergency appendix surgery from general anesthesia did they die from the procedure or due to appendicitis. I won't be arguing with the vehement anti-vaccinators as you can't force the insane to be sane and truth and logic doesn't work with the irrational.

THEsonofaBITCH · 29/07/2018 16:37

PS shewolfmum, that link is to a government SOUNDING website but is ACTUALLY just an anti-vaccination page full of mis-information.
