Unable to walk suddenly

TROUBLEDMAM · 03/07/2018 02:16

So on Thursday I suddenly became unable to walk
I could feel my back hurt n giving out n my legs trembling
Ive suffered with sciatica before n thought it was the beginning of an episode
Until Friday when I realised I couldn't walk at all
I called my gp out n she said it was sciatica n a pulled muscle
Give me strong drugs n left
Come Saturday night the drugs weren't masking the pain n I was sure they was something more wrong
I rang 111 who phoned an ambulance
They wouldn't take me to hospital said ring my doctor today
I did this n she said she would call back after speaking to another doctor but never did

I'm in absolute agony I'm pissing in a bucket
I've had muscle relaxers called lorazepam
Codeine phosphate paracetamol every four hours since Friday n I'm still in agony

Any one know wat I can do next?

What are you telling the doctors when you phone?

Why are you resigned to being stuck in, unable to walk without their kicking up a fuss?

Why are you resigned to kissing your sons assembly when you could hire a wheelchair?

Do you have a history of medical problems or misdiagnoses?

Why are the doctors brushing you off?

I think it’s time you became more assertive. Phone 111 again and ask for help. Phone your doctors and demand help. Tell them youre making notes of everything that is said and by who (and do it) because it is not acceptable to be ignored by medics. Ask your GP at what point you should be concerned. Ask them what they would do if they found themselves in your shoes. Ask them for a second opinion. Complain to the practice manager.

Don’t just give up and sit feeling sorry for yourself.

I feel there is more to this than the OP is telling us. She's so resigned to just not being able to walk and being brushed off - it doesn't make a lot of sense.

How far away is nearest A&E?

clairethewitch70 · 03/07/2018 14:51

Do you have any diagnosis, a longer term issue, that this could be a flare of? It just seems that you are resigned to feeling like this, like you have been suffering with this before.

But please, find a way to get to A&E.

TROUBLEDMAM · 03/07/2018 15:13

I feel like I have been on the phone to the doctors a lot
I have told them that, I have lower back pain and I cannot sit on a chair as it causes me agony I cannot walk as my legs don't work and the pain is unbearable I have to laid down or lean on my arm on my side. I have pain in my groin in my right side. The pain radiates down my left leg and I have loss of sensation down my left right leg.
The a n e is about 20 mins away with a four hour wait on a hard chair which I couldn't physically do.
I have suffered with sciatica in the passed but not like this
I'm in the north east of England

This came on after I'd been gardening

The doctor has given me morphine now

But I honestly don't know what to do

I've spoken with two doctors at my practice

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 03/07/2018 15:19

A&E. yes it hurts but tell them at triage. I paced the waiting room for an hour, then was given more morphine. Scanned, sent home (op date already booked)
Went back a week later and was scanned again and op moved as had cauda equina. It can vary, I drove myself to a&e with it

TROUBLEDMAM · 03/07/2018 15:20

Ollivander84 can I ask what happened in your cause your other symptoms etc

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 03/07/2018 15:21

Started with sciatica but different to what I had previously. Leg pain worsened until I wanted to cut my leg off. Couldn't lie on back and do a straight leg raise, leg wouldn't move. Numbness in leg and foot
Then felt like warm water running down my legs which is why I went back to a&e

feathermucker · 03/07/2018 15:22

Go to A and E. They should be able to find you somewhere to lie down whilst you wait.

Doesn't sound like it's going to go away on its own, so you need to take control now.

TROUBLEDMAM · 03/07/2018 15:22

The don't seem interested unless I loose control of my bladder or bowel
But I've rang n asked for doctor to ring me again

TROUBLEDMAM · 03/07/2018 15:24

Sounds very similar to me this

OP posts:
Surpriseeggsforbreakfast · 03/07/2018 15:24

I am a GP, I would advise a face to face consultation if you have weakness in your legs. I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable ruling out cauda equina syndrome over the phone. If it is pain which is stopping you walking that may not indicate an emergency and pain relief would be reasonable, but you have said you cannot use your legs which concerns me. If your GP can’t see you please go to UCC or A&E for assessment.

notapizzaeater · 03/07/2018 15:25

I'd turn up at a and e ? Has the doctor actually seen you or is it just over the phone ?

Ollivander84 · 03/07/2018 15:27

Go to a&e. My friend wasn't as lucky as me and had cauda equina for months before she was scanned and operated on, she lives with more side effects than me now

It might not be but it would be best to get checked in the right place. I had 3 scans before diagnosis and mine went from medium herniated disc to massive herniated disc and cauda equina in a few weeks

TheFairyCaravan · 03/07/2018 15:38

When I couldn't feel one of my legs, and was dragging it, my GP sent me straight to A&E without even seeing me. She said it was wasting urgent time waiting about for her when I desperately needed seeing by specialists.

It turned out to be they'd bruised a nerve while I was having a relatively minor procedure on my back.

You could end up with permanent damage if you don't get seen. Not everyone waits 4 hours in a&e.

TROUBLEDMAM · 03/07/2018 15:51

I can move my legs when I'm laid down
Is this normal when you have ces ?

OP posts:
WipsGlitter · 03/07/2018 15:59

Can you get a taxi to A&E? I'm really surprised the ambulance didn't take you.

As a pp said is there a history of anything significant?

TROUBLEDMAM · 03/07/2018 16:14

Significant? Like
Sorry I don't know what would be

OP posts:
LanguidLobster · 03/07/2018 16:17

Can someone drive you to A&E? PP have said it might escalate if not seen to soon

WipsGlitter · 03/07/2018 16:19

Previous chronic pain
Operation eg knee or hip replacement
Previous sciatica
Frequent visits to A&E for any reason
Frequent calls / visits to the GP

TROUBLEDMAM · 03/07/2018 16:33

I've had sciatica before 11 years after my son was born n it flares up now n then but nothing like this
No other things

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 03/07/2018 16:49

It just rings alarm bells - I had sciatica for years but it felt completely different. I was still able to walk and drive the day of my op

swingofthings · 03/07/2018 17:35

Why do you keep asking here? Most people, including a GP has told you to go to A&E so why are you delaying it? I don't understand it. 20 minutes is nothing and the 4 hours is only a target from arrival to treatment, it could be a lot quicker and of course they will help you manage the pain during the wait.

It's madness to think that people go to A&E with a small cut yet people like you are almost making a point to avoid it.
