Experiences of Agnus Castus for PMT?

I’ve been experiencing awful PMS since I finished breastfeeding, followed by incredibly heavy and painful periods. I went to the GP and she said to try Agnus Castus, which I would have to get from a naturopath as that sold at the chemist wouldn’t be strong enough.

I should start by saying I am taking evening primrose oil at the same time (as recommended by the GP). I had been taking that for one month when I saw the GP. I was feeling generally happier and my skin was looking much nicer when I began the Agnus Castus. As such, I can’t say what’s attributable to EPO or Agnus Castus.

After one month of the Agnus Castus my PMT is almost gone. I was feeling slightly snippy and really tired just before my period but then got hit with a bout of gastro so I’m putting a lot of the tiredness down to that (and blaming the snippiness on tiredness but I’m also sure DP was going out of his way to be irritating this week Wink).

The problem so far is that I started spotting a full week before my period started properly and it’s incredibly heavy again.

She said it will take 3 months to take full effect so I’m not worried, but I am curious about experiences other people may have had using this stuff. So far it feels like a wonder drug and I can’t believe it’s not freely available at this dose and also cheaper (very expensive from my naturopath!). Please share your experiences if you have time!

I’ve been tempted in the past to try Agnus Castus but it’s still sitting in the cabinet. I’ve heard it can really help PMT. I think it raises the amount of progesterone so it can change your cycle a bit but it does settle down. As I have PMDD i was concerned it would make me worse as progesterone isn’t well tolerated with PMDD.
If you’re taking hormonal contraception it will stop that working properly so be careful!
Also Agnus and primrose oil can make you extra fertile.
I’d give it a go for a few months at least as a lot of people swear by it.
For me, I sometimes take 0.5ml of Prozac in the liquid form. But since changing my diet and exercising and using the ‘headspace’ app, I haven’t needed it for the past two months and my periods have got lighter.
I hope this helps a bit even though I don’t have first hand experience of Agnus Castus!
