Anyone had a urethral diverticulum?

After months of worrying about a lump in my vagina I’ve finally been told that the mri showed that it’s a urethral diverticulum, well two to be precise and gynaecologist has referred me on to urology to plan a surgery to remove it as it varies in size but when it’s larger I can’t wee as it pretty much blocks the tube and I can’t ride a bike or sit comfortably on hard chairs etc as it’s really painful.
Has anyone had one before?
Has anyone here had the surgery before?
It’s near on impossible to find any info on it because apparently it’s not very common and even rarer that it’s properly diagnosed I’m really stressing out about the surgery, I’ve never been under a general anaesthetic before and supposedly it’s two weeks with a catheter after.
I have a six year old ds (nearly 7) with asd and dh works long hours I don’t know how I could cope and I’m the only one in the house who knows how to cook (dh tries but he’s a terrible cook!)
I need to stop googling because it’s just making me more anxious and the gynaecologist wasn’t exactly helpful just kept saying I needed to talk to the urologist when I see them but it’s the nhs I have no idea when it’ll be! I had the mri in March and only got the results on Thursday!

Hi guys, I’ve just had surgery and struggling. I had a large UD removed and had a catheter in for 3 weeks. I went for a urethrogram yesterday and there is a leak tracking to my bladder so the doctor said I have to leave the catheter in for another two weeks to allow it to heal further before repeating the test. They tried to reassure me that this does happens that it’s still likely to heal. Has the ever happened to anyone else? There is so little information on this condition online and I feel so scary and alone.

@Miaholly sorry to hear you are struggling 💜 it really is a tricky recovery that can take a while.
i wanted to reply as I know there’s hardly any info online about UDs. Whilst this didn’t happen to me I have heard of this happening to quite a few people. Infact there is a Facebook group called urethral diverticulum which I’m in and has helped me loads. It might be worth joining. There are women from all over the world, mainly US so someone always knows the answer! Hope this helps x

Thank you. I have just joined that group. Seems there is lots of people with their experiences on there so fingers crossed I can get some more guidance. Thanks so much for you reply. X

Can I ask what your symptoms are? I've had repeated uti type symptoms and a feeling of fullness on my left side of the urethra internally. I'm due to have a cystoscopy soon would this diagnose it?

Tatty1987 · 05/08/2025 06:49

@HibiscusGardens hey, from what I’ve heard most people only get diagnosed from an MRI with contrast but I’m no Dr.

Miaholly · 05/08/2025 17:01

I felt a bulge internally but uti symptoms like urgency, fullness and burning
