Antibiotics making me feel awful (metronidazole)

hatenighttime · 16/06/2018 21:19

Been prescribed metronidazole 400mg x 3 for 5 days by the dentist for a wisdom tooth inferior. on day 3 today and feeling so groggy, tired, nauseous - Is it the antibiotics ? Anyone been prescribed them and had similar experience? Or is it the infection? I'm quite sure I wasn't this bad before I started taking the tablets !

Hi. Metronidazole is notorious for this. If you Can, try to nibble a biscuit before taking them. It'll help with the nausea. Lots of fluids. Think of it as Domestos for your body. It's a very powerful antibiotic. Absolutely no alcohol whatsoever, including mouthwash.

hatenighttime · 17/06/2018 00:18

Thanks CMH. Just taken the third dose of the day.

Still feeling pain though and it's only a five day course. Worried that I'll have to have another course Sad

Forgot to add I've just finished day 3

Yeah it’s the nasty one. Not lovely and mild like penicillin. But it gets the job done and the alternative is much worse.
Sorry you feel crap. Everything to do with teeth is a misery.

AnduinsGirl · 17/06/2018 00:25

Oh it's an AWFUL one :( In my foolish youth I drank while taking Metronidazole - never EVER would I be so foolish again.

dahliaaa · 17/06/2018 00:25

It's a horrible AB for side effects - but very effective. Hope you feel better soon.

hatenighttime · 17/06/2018 10:38

Urgh I knew it was the tablets ! Sad

Day 4 today.

When do they start working on the infection ?

OP posts:
Slanetylor · 18/06/2018 10:09

They start working straight away. But take a while to get everything. Hope you feel better soon.

Realitea · 18/06/2018 12:26

It’s a horrible antibiotic for making you feel bad Sad
They can switch it to amoxicillin if it’s really unbearable

endofthelinefinally · 18/06/2018 12:29

Don't take it on an empty stomach and don't even go near alcohol.
I sympathise. It makes me feel awful too.
Only 2 days to go.

funmummy48 · 18/06/2018 12:37

I've had it for a tooth infection too and it makes me feel sure but it does clear up the infection. Good luck!

hatenighttime · 18/06/2018 13:19

I called up the dentist this morning and told about the tingling prickly weird feeling in my
Face and arm , and they've told me to stop taking it (only had one day left) but the four days of taking the horrid things hasn't even touched the pain. Sad

I'm going in again today at 4:30.

I don't even know if it's a tooth infection anymore. The pain isn't even in my mouth. It's near my jaw going down to my neck .

I am on my 5th course of metronidazole for a dental infection. It is the pits.

hatenighttime · 18/06/2018 13:27

Oh tweenage, I am ready to cry.

Do you get tingly prickly face too?

OP posts:
TweenageAngst · 18/06/2018 13:29

Endless nausea, headaches and feeling so tired I could cry. No tingling but have actually lost 2 kg combined feeling crap and having a sore mouth.

TweenageAngst · 18/06/2018 13:30

My pain was jaw and neck as well, I had the tooth out and now have a big infected hole in my mouth.

hatenighttime · 18/06/2018 13:33

Fuck sorry you're having such a shit time

Thanks

Hi everyone ,

So I went back to my dentist after completing day 4 and absolutely nothing changing and the dentist switched me to amoxicillin 500mg x 3 a day.

I took the one capsule Monday evening , then three doses yday and have taken two today.

I actually feel worse today in terms of pain. Monday evening when I took the pill my pain went away completely , It was amazing. Then yday it crept back and today it's been much worse.

Isn't it supposed to be getting better??? I'm so confused and stressed out I can cry.

Sorry if I'm reading this wrong but you know it's not a painkiller right?
Make sure you are taking something alongside it for that.

Hope it eases soon Thanks

hatenighttime · 20/06/2018 20:31

Foof that made me laugh.

No I know it's not a painkiller.

Maybe I've been trying to go without painkillers for longer periods to see if I'm pain free yet! I think that's what I've been doing

AwkwardSquad · 20/06/2018 20:36

I had a really nasty tooth abscess and was given metronidazole and amoxicillin at the same time. I felt like death, but it worked. I was on ibruprofen and co-codamol for the pain.

hatenighttime · 20/06/2018 20:41

awkward how did the tooth abscess feel?

I'm wondering if I'm the only person the world with an infection under the wisdom teeth with no pain or symptoms
Whatsoever in my mouth but awful Pain under my jaw/behind my ear/down my neck.

Definitely had pain in my mouth and face. It was a rear molar. The gum was so tender I nearly screamed when the doctor touched it, except I couldn’t because she had her finger in my mouth Grin

Cheek swelled up so much I looked like a lopsided chipmunk, nearly to the eye socket. Could only open my mouth a little, felt almost like lockjaw feels (or how I imagine it feels, anyway). Probably the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. That, or the time I went over on my ankle, thought I’d fractured it.

YorkieDorkie · 20/06/2018 21:06

Are you using mouthwash OP?
