Bunion pain - anyone know how to reduce this without surgery?

Hi - I’ve had a bunion on one foot since my early 20s. I mostly wear orthotics insoles in either flat or low heeled shoes, and have just had to accept I have ugly feet and shoes! I think I’ve worn sandles a bit too much this month due to the warm weather, and my foot has got more painful than usual- although this happens from time to time. It’s quite a while since my orthotics were made and the podiatrist who made them has retired so I can’t go back to her for help.
Has any one found anything that helps reduce the swelling and pain? It’s been keeping me awake. I’ve been rubbing in ibuprophen gel ( I can’t take anti inflammatory) and using a cool pack.
Has any one found a bunion splint useful over night or other guards? Has anyone had surgery to correct a bunion. Is the recovery still months?
