Lots of blood in poo

Name changed for this and I’m not the poo troll, honest (although I would say that, wouldn’t I?).

I’m currently abroad and have had a bit of pain in lower back for the last couple of days. I did a poo earlier and when I went to wipe there was a lot of bright red blood in the toilet bowl. I thought at first I’d come on early as I do have very heavy periods. But on checking it’s definitely from the back door and it’s a lot. All round the bowl and I’d guess around 100ml (although obviously hard to tell exactly). Then when I went to the loo for a wee later I did a big fart and farted out more red blood (I know, I’m delightful).

Google suggests it’s hemorroids as blood is bright red. But I have no bum hole pain, have never had them before and a perfunctory check doesn’t seem to reveal any new lumps or bumps.

Should I get it checked ASAP? We’re back home on Friday so I would have to wait until Monday to see a doctor. I don’t speak the language here and not many people speak English either. If possible I’d like to avoid a Bridget Jones style conversation in a pharmacy with me acting out shitting blood. Obviously if I’m about to crap out all my internal organs I should probably suck it up though. Any ideas anyone?

I've had this before and it has been a small internal tear, is there any pin when you move your sphincter?

Is it bleeding when you're not moving it? Is there blood inside your underwear?

I tend to work on the assumption that if it's not leaking out when still it's probably ok, and from a tear - they can release what looks like a lot of bright blood.

However - am not a doctor, personal experience only, hopefully this bumps for you!

Thanks what. No pain in the bum hole region at all, just some in my lower back. There’s a very good chance this is due to the fact that the bed I’m sleeping on is really uncomfortable though. Nothing leaking at all when I’m not on the loo, which I’m taking to be a good sign too.

Same here. Anusol to help heal things up. Try not to strain when pooing so drink lots of water and fruit and veggies to ease transit as it were...

It’s “good” if the blood is bright red rather than dark and mixed in with the poo. I say “good” because it’s never great to be bleeding from your bum but it’s usually dark blood that would be an urgent concern. It probably looks more than it is once it’s reached the toilet, 100mls is an awful lot of blood to be coming out of your bum! Is it only when you’re pooing? Blood in urine plus back pain could be sign of a urine infection that’s made it’s way up to your kidneys. I’d go to the doctors once you are home but don’t panic, i don’t think you urgently need seen.

Sounds as though could be piles, internal ones higher up can cause no pain just bleeding. Fissures are sore, I think you would know if it were one of them!

I would say see how it is when home and if still bleeding go to the GP.

BloodyArseholes · 30/05/2018 07:34

Thank you for advice. Glad to hear that I’m probably not going to drop dead in the next few days. I’ll go to the doctor as soon as I get home.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday!

OP even though that was a worrying thing to happen you still managed to be funny

I admire your spirit! and I'm hoping it's nothing - I nearly fainted when a friend of mine filled (his words) a toilet bowl with bright red blood, but it DID turn out to be nothing serious and he is fit as a flea 10 years on.

Flowers good luck and picture your body silently and in the background doing its best to heal up and repair that little tear or split of whatever it is.

wineandsunshine · 30/05/2018 09:40

My sister had this! It was internal piles - she went to the GP and he wasn't even bothered by it, said it would clear up in a few weeks and it did!

The Bridget Jones imagery made me recall an uncomfortable (but in retrospect hilarious) visit to a pharmacy in Iran, of all places, with a friend who needed a pregnancy test. Not sure whether it was more Bridget Jones or Mr Bean, but the scene would have amused a fly on the wall Grin

Do make that trip to the GP when you return, OP. Bright red just means the source is low down rather than high up (so the blood is fresh and undigested). It doesn’t tell you whether the reason is trivial or non-trivial. I have had the non-trivial sort, though I had a whole array of red flags and not just this one.

It does need a doctor’s visit to advise, but shouldn’t spoil the rest of your trip.

Moonkissedlegs · 30/05/2018 10:46

Sorry but your OP was hilarious!

On a serious note though, absolutely urgent appt at the GP on Monday. It's a tricky one isn't it, but it probably is nothing.

Try some prep h or anusol. Hope you are ok. I've had similar (inc bloody farts) and it went away with anusol.

Love the name change by the way, am gobsmacked that one was free!! Shock
