When I drink water I feel like I'm going to drown or choke. WTF is going on?

I did google but much prefer an actual interaction. It started when I was taking longish drinks but it happens almost as soon as I start to drink now. Can't deny I'm a bit scared. I asked the nurse when there and she said anxiety. I have had a stressful few years and two years ago ended up with anxiety and have had weird side effects of that. Can anyone help please? Thank you.

I thought this had eased but it's back. Anyone got any ideas?

Um the only thing I can liken it to is I sometimes feel like I have a lump in my throat. It's a symptom of my hayfever and goes when I take an antihistamine. I don't struggle to swallow though so not sure it's the same thing.

I've had it off and on for years. It is anxiety related I'm afraid. How's your iron levels? Mine weirdly gets worse when my iron is low.

YearOfYouRemember · 28/05/2018 19:46

There no feeling of a lump. It's literally like I'm full up and can't take in any more liquid Confused.

Don't know for sure re iron levels. Had some blood tests recently and nothing untoward.

The nurse said anxiety Sad.

Any cures for anxiety?

Oddly, this sometimes happens to me right after I wake up in the morning. It's like my swallowing muscles haven't fully woken up yet or something.
Deep breathing can help anxiety and anything you can do to distract yourself from your thoughts - housework helped me as if my hands are busy I can't focus on other thoughts as much.

Thank you. I do need to remember to relax. I just got back and was thirsty and ale to drink normally then ten minutes later I struggled again Confused.

Yep, that used to happen me with my anxiety except my symptom was feeling like I couldn't fill my lungs up with air. If I was distracted i could breathe just fine but the second I started thinking about it again it went all haywire. I feel for you, anxiety is just awful.

YearOfYouRemember · 29/05/2018 18:11

Thnak you and I'm sorry you have anxiety too. I just don't understand why I have it now. I've had much worse things happen previously than what has caused this now.

I had difficulty swallowing and got referred by the doctor to a speech therapist. They gave me exercises to do to help me swallow. It gave me a focus when eating or drinking. Might help?

Hemlock2013 · 29/05/2018 18:17

I have had this with anxiety. It still comes back when I’m around people in certain situations. Like meetings or interviews. I literally cannot get liquid down, it just comes out again... much worse when you’re thinking about it.

If you’re home alone then just keep trying. Worse that can happen is that you’ll spit it out. Nothing to worry about x

YearOfYouRemember · 29/05/2018 19:24

I can eat fine, no issues with swallowing, it just feels like I'm full up and there's nowhere for more drink to go down. I don't spit it out, I just stop drinking and swallow the tiny bit I have in my mouth.

Make sure me wonder whether I need to reassess my recent choices.

I'm 43 years old and I've recently started experiencing some paranoia/anxiety while drinking water. I am allergic to water I have chronic urticaria which means I break out in hives once I drink it so I'm wondering if it's related to that. Now as I read the comments I'm concerned that it may be my iron levels as well because I have had problems with that in the past. I hope this helps someone.

Mitch111 · 18/11/2023 14:14

Hey do you remember this I realized it's been years ago I was wondering what you ever done about it cuz I'm having the same issue right when I wake up I can't drink this is only recently started happening to me
