Urgent referral for breast lump

dailyshite · 14/05/2018 23:13

Been referred to the breast cancer clinic due to a lump etc. It has come through really quickly which is good but does anyone know what the appointment will entail?

GP didn't seem to know and I'd quite like to know what to expect and how long it will take once I get there.

Snap. Except for severe pain not lump
My appointment is Monday and I too would like to know!

🤞🤞🤞

dailyshite · 14/05/2018 23:17

Tuesday here!

How are you feeling about it?

They will give you a mammogram at least, that wont take too long. Its not very comfortable but shouldnt hurt. They may do an ultrsound or even a biopsy, that is put a hollow needle in to take a sample. That will be with a local anaesthetic. I would allow the whole of the rest of the day but hopefully you wont need it. Good Luck.

theredjellybean · 14/05/2018 23:18

I have been twice.. You'll be seen by doctor, examined, they will probably uss it and you'll have a mammogram. I also had a fine needle biopsy on the day. Whole appointment took about 2.5hrs

I might be a bit out of date now.

When I had my appt under 2 week rule, there was a medical history form to fill in, followed by a chat with a senior breast nurse, going through the medical history and everything younwant to say about current symptoms. Then there was an ultrasound, a wait then a mammogram. I got the results on the spot (unlike screening mammograms which take a few weeks to come back) and they were avpboe to pronounce it a benign cyst.

If however they are not sosure as they were for me, they'll go on to take a biopsy (and you'll need someone else tomdescribe that).

Very nice clinic, btw, with staff whonare all, very good at dealing with tense patients. It ran to timel, which really helped, and was well set up so there was very little hanging around once called forward to the nurse.

dailyshite · 14/05/2018 23:22

That is really helpful thank you. Sounds very comprehensive.

GP appt was at 9 today, had an appt by 10.30 for a week tomorrow. I was surprised by how efficient it all was.

I was referred for pain and first the Dr examined my breasts then I had a mammogram. The longest bit was waiting for the results of the mammogram which was about 15 minutes. I then went back into see the Dr who gave me a leaflet on breast pain and said take evening primrose or starflower oil which can help with the pain.
It all took about an hour and three quarters.

dailyshite · 14/05/2018 23:26

I think I would feel a bit of a fraud over there Backfor as it all seems a bit surreal at the moment (and I haven't told anyone except DH because of all sorts of stress that everyone else is going through), although thank you for the link. Maybe next week if it goes that way?

dailyshite · 14/05/2018 23:29

Thanks Lulu - I have a lump and pain in my armpit and breast.

Stupidly, I ignored it for about a month as I read somewhere that if it hurts it's nothing to worry about - lump doesn't hurt but horrible pain in other areas. The dangers of Dr Google!

OP posts:
BackforGood · 14/05/2018 23:31

That's ok.
They will give you a hand hold while you wait, that's all, as everyone has been there and knows what it is like. Lots of people pop in with a few questions and then disappear again when they get their good news. Smile

dailyshite · 14/05/2018 23:34

Thats really kind Backfor, thank you. Ironically dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer just before I found the lump, so i might have a little read with that in mind too.

I'm off to bed now (usually asleep by 10 so husband thinks something's wrong with me!), so not ignoring replies.

Thank you all

Will catch up tomorrow.

QOD - best of luck for tomorrow. Hope it goes well Flowers

Just been through this for a second time.

So, arrive and wait, filling in medical form (also sent to home but I forgot to bring it). Consultant appointment with chaperone to run through plus examination. Out and back to wait for mammogram. Mammogram is really uncomfortable (I have tiny boobs ) and verging towards painful - imagine putting your boob in a vice.

Off to another room for results and ultrasound - lump not visible on either but they could feel it so decided to biopsy (first time it was visible and a cyst so they drained it, no return appointment needed). They decided to biopsy - not comfortable, anaesthetic stings and it makes a weird sound.

Back to original consultant for next steps - basically, don't worry, come back in a week.

Week later - two minute job, saw someone different, no examination, all fine.

Juells · 20/05/2018 19:34

I had a lump removed under GA (years ago) then was diagnosed with fibrocystic breasts. Eventually I used to just go to the Outpatients of a nearby hospital and have the cysts aspirated. Some of my lumps were huge :( Like two syringes-full. I used to take a few strong paracetamol beforehand, never needed local anaesthetic. It feels like pressure rather than pain IMO.

ragged · 20/05/2018 20:16

Did OP report back? Hope things are ok.

myrtleWilson · 20/05/2018 20:20

ragged OP has posted two posts previous to yours and throughout the thread....

daily hope Tuesday goes well for you and QOD best wishes for tomorrow

dailyshite · 20/05/2018 20:56

Thanks Myrtle - just waiting really.

Had been trying to keep it all very quiet as dad has prostate cancer and is going in for surgery this week so planned to not say anything to family unless there was something of note to say (current mantra is that it is far more likely to be nothing than something Wink ). Sod's law, his op is now at the same time as my appointment so I've had to explain why I can't go and sit with mum while he is waiting to go in. Wish I hadn't had to tell them, feels like a bit of a fuss really. It's very helpful to hear stories which resulted in nothing sinister (even though it all sounds very unpleasant!). Will take paracetamol with me as going to head straight down the motorway to mum and don't to be sitting there with sore boobs!

Hope QOD sees this and realises that we are thinking of her

oops... these sort of sandals.

Urgent referral for breast lump
ragged · 20/05/2018 21:27

Ah nuts, sorry for the screw up on the sandals.

I thought OP meant her appointment was on Tuesday the 15th, not 22nd. I wonder if 3 lots of confusion is a record for me? Will slink off to twitter, now.

dailyshite · 20/05/2018 21:48

Haha - glad its not just me Grin

OP posts:
QOD · 21/05/2018 09:28

Thanks peeps - 🤞
Will check back in later
Mum offered to go with me but I get ‘funny’ with fuss. I’d rather ring after or call a friend or something
She whitters a LOT
Dh is a man who doesn’t do affection so I’m expecting a message shortly saying
‘Lemme know how ya go’
Dd is a student radiographer and assures me it’ll be fine. Nearly always is 👍🏻

QOD · 21/05/2018 12:16

Nothing she finds suspicious in boobs. Referral for non urgent mammogram and ultrasound
Wear soft bra at night
Take oil of evening primrose
👍🏻👍🏻🤞💐

dailyshite · 21/05/2018 22:29

Great news - really pleased that it's sounding positive.

OP posts:
QOD · 21/05/2018 23:38

Thanks. I realise now how nervous I’ve been 🙄😘
