Just got braces on my teeth.. the agony!

Just got braces fitted on my teeth age 43 and a half because my teeth are just sort of wandering around in my mouth and look awful... not going through a midlife crisis or anything.. although I did leave my horrible ex last year!

Anyway it #%%@ hurts and I've got 18 months to go minus one day before they're taken off. I can't eat and look ridiculous. Any tips on managing the ulcers and pain and the double takes on the street with my mahoosive mouth? Anyone else had one?

In the miniscule possibility that I might meet someone during that time what are you supposed to do about kissing etc?

Yes they do hurt when they just been tighten but give it few days then it will be better. I had one as teen and nobody believes you that it hurts! It’s like someone’s punching you in face continual with pressue.

It’s worth it in the end. Bonjelia and wax can help if it’s cutting your mouth.

Had them at around 15-17, not as adult but the first day after they are fitted/adjusted were painful and then things improve a lot after that.
I used to take painkillers just before going and again later in the day which helped a lot.
You can get wax type stuff to put over back ones if it rubs.
Honestly it will get better!

dementedpixie · 11/05/2018 21:29

The pain will ease off, take painkillers. Did you get wax? You put it on bits of the brace that rub to prevent ulcers. I met dh when I had mine and kissing must have gone ok as we're still together!

CandyMelts · 11/05/2018 21:30

Oh those first days are the worst, its never that bad again I promise!

Watto1 · 11/05/2018 21:31

As everyone else has said, it's at its worst for 2ish days after having it fitted and after adjustments. It'll be so worth it in the end. Hang on in there!

I've just gotten mine off and they did hurt at first but after a few days there fine... saying that every so often the brace will cut your gums and stuff but get the dental wax and put it over the brace where it's cutting into you and it should relieve the pain and discomfort... I had to go back once a month to get them tightened and I found that the sorest part of it as for about 3 days after my teeth used be hopping with pain..
The discomfort is so worth it when they come off.. I haven't stopped smiling since they came off...

Watto1 · 11/05/2018 21:32

And kissing is fine!

MikeWyzowski · 11/05/2018 21:32

It took my dd 5 days for there to be no pain. Nurofen, wax, Bonjela and salt water rinse helped her. After a couple of weeks she hardly noticed them and 6 weeks in she could already see a difference. It'll be worth the pain!

AWaspOnAWindowInAHeatwave · 11/05/2018 21:57

I had mine age 23-25 and they fucking killed for the first week or so. After that, I barely noticed them except for a couple of days after each adjustment. I think your mouth skin sort of toughens after a short while so the brackets don't rub through the skin. Keep at it, the end result will be worth it!

Munchyseeds · 12/05/2018 11:56

As everyone says.. .it will pass and you will even be able to eat pretty much anything...promise!

swingofthings · 12/05/2018 13:43

I was exactly the same age as you when I had mine put on. I did so after I saw the positive effect on my DD. I felt so bad that I hadn't shown more sympathy afterwards. It's really not nice is it?

The good part is that it really does get better, both because you do get used to it, but also because the pain is not as bad and after the 3rd or 4th visit, you don't have any at all.

What I can say that it REALLY is worth it. I was told too that I would have them for 18 months, but in the end, I kept them 13 months. They didn't tell me that they were coming off until the visit before last, so it was a nice surprise.

It's been over two years and Thank God my teeth have not moved. I had a wire set at the back and I kept the retainer at night for longer than recommended. Being able to smile without feeling self-conscious is really priceless. Just wait until it's you, you'll agree that it was all worth it.

orthodontist recommend ice cold water swirled in mouth when son got his. it helped....

MmeButtox · 12/05/2018 14:39

Iglu is amazing for mouth ulcer pain. I'd probably combine that with wax to cover the poky bits si you don't keep damaging yourself

Hullabalooo · 12/05/2018 21:42

Oh you're all brilliant! Thanks for this. I've got them on both top and bottom and am actually finding it hard to speak right now. Probably a blessing though 😁

Is salt water literally just that? Can I get iglu from a pharmacist? I've actually lost weight from not being able to eat much since Thursday. A blessing in disguise I guess.
