Does anyone do and believe in liver/gallbladder cleanses? I'm sceptical...

I would love to hear from anyone who has tried a liver/gallbladder cleanse and thinks it helped them.

I just completed a cleanse and so far I'm disappointed. I really think the mug of oil and lemon you drink before bed is just excreted back out the next morning, helped by the strong laxative doses of Epsom salts you take in the evening and morning. The colour of the oil drink and the colour of the "stones" are similar once you factor in things like stomach bile. And I've noticed that the photos of removed gallbladders tend to show smooth beige/black stones, not the bobbly yellow/green ones people show on their blog entries.

It is possible that some real gallstones get excreted with the oil. It's too soon for me to tell, and I didn't go rummaging in the toilet bowl to check! I didn't manage to sleep at all last night which I'm sure is helping me feel wretched but tomorrow lunchtime I am going to eat a pizza for lunch and see what happens... If I have truly just got rid of dozens of stones it should be a comfortable experience.

I would like to hear if anyone has had success with this, if the pain just went away. Like I said, I feel sceptical right now, but maybe I'll feel great in a few days?

I'm pretty sure they aren't that safe to be honest. The things you consume don't go through your gallbladder so drinking oil won't flush them out. I think sometimes they get pushed out and get expelled by your body (but I'm guessing this would be very painful) if they are tiny but if you have dozens this won't happen. Usually they get stuck though.

Realistically if you are having a lot of pain from gallstones your gallbladder isn't working properly anymore and needs to come out. Get advice from a professional not the internet!

I am waiting to have an abdominal scan, I just thought it might be interesting to see if I could clear my gallbladder beforehand! It seems that's not going to happen though. I think I'll miss out on the pizza after all and go back to the low fat diet!

I read an article a couple of weeks ago but i cant find it now sorry, but it basically said detoxing is a load of crap as our bodies are designed to detox themselves.
A lad i work with also did some with his gf last year and he said he felt better afterwards but thinks thats only coz you feel so shit on all the laxatives etc. That when you finish you feel normal but the brian tricks you jnto thinking you feel better than before coz youve felt shit for a week if that makes sense.

Mine weren’t smooth when they were removed properly.

Nothing you consume goes up to your gallbladdder.

Does normal/high fat actually aggravate your gallbladder, it’s not a recommended treatment plan to reduce fat unless fat sets off attacks.

I think you are spot on with your initial suspicions, OP, and there's even been a scientific study which confirmed that these lumps are the product of the oils in the "cleanse" - see second link below . I don't think there is any plausible basis for these "cleanses" . See for example what Quackwatch says about it, and for a very detailed explanation, see Science - based medicine
