help! mesenteric adenitis: has anybody else had a child diagnosed with this?

my dd age 8 has been diagnosed with this . She has been very unwell with various viruses over the last month or so. Last Thursday she stared to ge really bad stomach pains and vomiting - so bad we were worried it could be appendicitis. But the doctor says it's mesenteric adenitis (inflammed lymph glands basically). We have been back to GP/out of hours plus A&E since then. She is in agony, always in pain and very often screaming with the pain and writhing on the floor. It is worse in the evening. Anybody have any tips for managing the pain - calpol doesn't touch it. Can I demand codeine type meds? Any advice at all? It's awful watching her go through this.

cardy - only just seen this I am so sorry. What happened to her? My daughter is ill again with this now having had a tummy bug 3 weeks ago and then a urinary tract infection and since then she has been vomiting and back in teh terrible pain again. For more than 2 weeks we have had virtually no relief from it. I would love to know if anybody has any new ideas for me - I am now waiting for an outpatients appointment to see a paediatrician but am so worried about her. The gps have started to ask if she is worried about anything and i would say 'yes' being ill all the time!'. Any ideas, please and how is everybody else's children now? We are due to go to France next week (drving after a short crossing) and I cannot see how we can a) subject her to the drive and b) subject the rest of the campsite to my daughter's screams through the day and night

My 4 yr old was taken to emergency doc last night after days of agony with his stomach cramps. They have said that it looks like its mesenteric adenitis I'm just a bit lost at the mo. Last year this happened twice and the second time they thought it was appendicitis but decided to wait and it did stop. Do i need to speak more to the docs as i feel a little left to it!!

Any update on this? My son is going through this now, he’s 3!

My son who is 4 is also currently going through this. We are heading into week 3 now. Although he seems better during the day, at night he's still in loads of pain. At this point I think we have all forgotten what a good night's sleep feels like x

Hi. My 9byear old son suddenly got poorly 11 days ago. Vomited undigested food once. Then got severe stomach pain. Then followed temps of 39-40. Weve been to dr and paedeatric assesment unit several times. Long story short, theyve done bloods 3 times, infection markers going down. Also had surgical teams check for appendicities. They diagnose mesenteric adonitis. I have to treat with calpol and nurofen.
Pain is easing of a little but temperatures arent. He can walk but gets very tired. Still very pale but eating better. The temp creeps to 38 in the evening. Gp told us to comr back tomorrow if temps continue. What are other peoples experience with mesenteric adonitis? How long before it gets better? How long did temp last? He hasnt been scanned and he has a history of constipation too.....

Hi my 5 year old son has been diagnosed with through ultrasound with mesenteric adenitis. After 4 visits to GP and 3 A&E they kept him in for only one night and Dr said that we are able to go home with this and if he was to get dehydrated that's only time they would treat him.

he has been in agony and calpol and neurfeon has not been doing any justice.Doctor said it lasts few days and I told him it’s been week yesterday. When I told him medicine doesn’t work he said there’s nothing different we will do here than you’re doing at home so basically let him be in agony at home. He started off with tummy ache and then next day all day vomiting which eased until he use to get these episodes when the pain would go but come back so severe that he would vomit after.

He never had diarrhoea or temperature and the pain is not on his left or right but always going across his lower abdomen intestines and pain always same place. are these similar symptoms other people are witnessing. They done bloods and they came back clear and urine came back clear until yesterday- little cloudy and tiny traces protein but nothing concerning.

When they done ultrasound yesterday on his lower tummy found nothing and then he said let me check again diagnosed him with above. The only other tests done was press down on tummy and he’s not in pain anywhere else nor have they found anything suspicious lumps etc…

He just screams mostly worst at night waiting nothing is helping. Begging me to fix it which is heartbreaking as I feel helpless!!!----

Hi. My daughter was diagnosed 3 years ago. We still have issues/flare ups. Been to go several times (1st flare up we took her to a&e), had ear infections, UTI. Had blood tests this year all fine. Thinking of asking for a scan or referal to paediatrician . Can I ask if your child’s resolved after a certain age. Appreciate it was a long time ago.

JJOD28 · 10/08/2025 22:44

He didn’t have an episode in awhile now (fingers cross) but that was always the case as it use to come and last few days to a week but then go away. The fact it wasn’t staying long term Dr didn’t seem too worried. It was only that time I posted and it comes every few months. Hopefully now it’s the end of it. Hope your daughter is feeling better too.
