Why do my knees make a crunching sound when I walk up stairs?!

It sounds totally gross! Literally - crunch, crunch, crunch as I go up stairs. There's no pain or inflammation and it's not getting worse - but what the bloody hell is it?!

To avoid a drip feed - I lived in a bungalow for a year so obviously not many stairs climbed, especially not daily.

mine do as well even though I just lost 3 stone - makes me cringe but no pain

Crepitus? Mine make hideous noises but I have two types of arthritis.

Booby - me too! 😂

Slutty - thanks, I'll look that up.

Mine have done this for years - 20+ years. It sounds vile and feels vile too if you put your hand on it. Grindy and crunchy.

It doesn't hurt though and I run 4-5 times a week

My SIL who is a physio told me it's often an imbalance in the muscles in your legs. So if you've been doing exercise that strengthens the muscles in the front (eg cycling) you'll also need to do some exercises that strengthen the muscles at the back of your leg. If that makes any sense?!

Mine do this. I usually have to sing a bit to cover the racket as I go upstairs. But they don’t hurt and I am pretty fit. I once went to see a physio about it but frankly it was a waste of money.
