Lump on neck and consistantly dodgy bllod results - can anyone help please?

Hoping for some advice on a lump and some abnormal blood tests I have had recently.

In October last year I noticed a lump behind my ear, I went to the doctor and he advised it was a raised lymph node, said to keep an eye on it and go back if it got worse, I developed new symptoms or if I still had it in 4 weeks.

Went back after 4 weeks and had bloods done – I was advised they were abnormal and had to be repeated. The repeat tests were also abnormal. I was then sent to see a Haematologist in December as the GP was concerned by my blood.

Went to the haematology appointment, they had a feel of my lymph node, and checked the rest of me for further lymph nodes (there weren’t any) and ran more blood tests.

Back to my GP after Christmas for the results and they basically said that my ERS levels were abnormal, but perhaps abnormal was my normal(?!) and that tests for autoimmune diseases came back negative. I was told to get back in touch if the lump got bigger or more appeared.

I went back last week as I though the lump was now about bigger and it had been 7 months. Doc didn’t think it had gotten bigger but did some blood tests anyway.

He has just phoned my ESR is now at 34, it was 27 in October and 30 in December, so it is steadily increasing. In the other blood tests (not sure what they were, blood count maybe) one was a tiny bit high and one a tiny bit low. But all other tests thyroid, liver etc were all fine.

He wants to contact the lab and ask for further analysis on my blood and for me to do a urine sample and hand it in as soon as I can. He is also sending me back to Haematology and also making a referral to ENT. He did mention that he now thinks the lump is not connected to the blood results – which seemed a bit odd.

I feel generally healthy, I don’t smoke, drink much, I am over weight and my diet could be better. I have had issues with endometriosis in the past but after a laparoscopy and laser treatment about 5 years ago haven’t really had any problems.

I am starting to feel really quite concerned, and was hoping anyone with experience of blood results would be able to shed any light on how bad an ESR of 34 is and if an increase from 27 since October should be something to be overly concerned with.

Thank you Smile (sorry it's quite long)

My ESR was 67 when I had a chest infection. Good they are chasing it up though.

Thanks for replying, yes I'm glad they are chasing it up.

Did you feel really unwell when your esr levels were so high? I don't really feel unwell at all. In fact I felt awful in October when they were first taken with a cold/fluey virus compared with now.

No, I didn’t feel bad then. Like you, I felt worse weeks earlier, in fact I was in town shopping when the Dr rang to say my ESR results were ‘interesting’!
