Exactly that. I've been coughing all day and half of last night. I'm exhausted and my throat feels raw. Currently sat with my head over a bowl full of steam which brings some slight respite. I don't think it's an actual chest infection, just a bog standard tail end of a cold cough. Any remedies anyone can suggest?! Tia

Only thing that stops my cough is literally to stop talking and rest my voice completely. Not always practical I know, but if I have to communicate I whisper. One full day of silence usually does the trick. DH loves it ! Also to sleep sitting up with airline type neck pillow.
Hope it goes soon.

Not sure if it would be medically advised, but can you get ahold of someone’s asthma inhaler for some relief? Might help give you a break for a bit?

I don’t suppose you have asthma? i had coughs for months that I couldn’t shift and that’s what it turned out to be. Totally gone now that I have an inhaler.

Pholcodine linctus might help. Also slather your feet in Vicks vapour rub before bed and put socks on. It will magically stop the cough so you can get some sleep.

Does your chest hurt when you cough? Last time I had this I suffered for ages and eventually went to the doctor after a couple of nights coughing and not getting any sleep. Turned out to be pleurisy. Steroids fixed it. Go to the doc

I recently had a bad cough and when I took my painkillers my cough eased considerably, I looked it up and yes codeine is a cough suppressant. If you have any c paracetamol and codeine that would help

My mother creates this cough syrup and swears by it: chop an onion and add to a bowl. Then add honey, mix it all up and let it 'marinade'. Stir every so often. You want the liquid off the onions mix with the honey, the longer the better. Then have a spoonful of the syrup as and when required.

Appaz works wonders!

Thanks all, I've done honey and lemon, bought some cough sweets and taken some night nurse. Oh and slathered myself in vicks. Hopefully that combination will work otherwise I'll move on to your other suggestions. It's just a tickly/dry cough, no chest pain but my head and throat hurt from the constant coughing.

I feel you OP. I'm on week 6 of a nasty hacking cough 😷 so far GP hasn't given me anything...going back tomorrow again! Feel better soon!

WeeM · 09/04/2018 23:10

Pholcodine linctus-it’s amazing stuff. It’s actually a cough suppressant so inhibits your coughing reflex (or something like that!). It’s about £3 over the counter. And I find propping myself up with loads of pillows helps too. There’s nothing worse, hope it’s better soon Flowers

For a dry cough, Robitussin, but there's loads of contraindications so do check with the pharmacist.

AuntLydia · 10/04/2018 07:26

Thanks again. Made it to 3am before the night time coughing started so that's not too bad. I'll have a look or those medicines today though. Dancing, you poor thing, that's a long time to go with a cough. I hope the doctor can do something for you!
