Ferritin and hair loss

Hello. I have hair loss - and it's getting worse. I had my ferritin levels checked two years ago and I had a level of 17 (normal range was 15 - 155) so no treatment was needed. I had it tested again last week and now have a level of 12. However, my doctor says that normal level is now counted as 11 upwards so I am still fine. I am not fine - I have bald patches! Is it something I can work on myself or do I need to get a different doctor? Thanks!

I had this years ago but fortunately had an understanding and sensible doctor who took the time to find out the cause and corrected that and gave me iron tablets to boost my levels. See another doctor.

i had hair loss at a level of 11. i still wasnt treated even with low haemoglobin and low MCV , so i treated it myself with ferrous bisglycinate 50mg.

some people say your ferritin should be at least 50

UK reference ranges for blood tests are very wide so nearly everybody is classed as "fine"

I have Haemochromatosis, so have ferrin levels checked regularly, 11 is too low, the ideal level is 100, but used to be 50, so my consultant tells me, mine at the moment is 67, and my hair is thinning too, but i am older than you,so age could play a part with me,
Your thyroid might need testing as that can be a reason if its too underactive or overactive

Thanks all. I had my thyroid is fine too but I didn't get given the values so really hard to tell how fine that is exactly.

My gp told me this too, so definitely think you should be taking some kind of supplement.
