Hi. I had a smear done 3.5 months after giving birth as previous result was insufficent (I think that's what they said). This latest smear has come back as abnormal. I have read the leaflet that came with the letter, and it all sounds pretty harmless, but I'd like to know if anyone else had an abnormal result from a smear they had just after having a baby, and if the next smear after that was normal again ? Thanks.

i think pregnancy prob could mess with it coz of all the diff hormones playing havoc with your cervix...but dont they reccomend smaears at the 6 week postnatal check? coz if they do then that must mean pregnancy wouldnt cause any change? ohhh im confusing myself now

Like you I had an abnormal scan soon after birth and had to have a repeat scan with more detail or something like that. All came back clear and my Ob did say that sometimes after pregnancy and birth (I had a section by the way) it takes a while for all to settle and it is not that unusual for smears to come back abnormal. Go and get another repeat smear and try not to think too much about it until you get any results.

A smear test at the 6w check up is standard, so in answer to your question, I wouldn't have thought so.

I had a series of abnormal smears a few years ago, and the treatment is very straightforward. Having regular tests is a good thing as it means nothing can progress too far before anything is done.

Hope you are ok.

my gp said not to bother til a few months after giving birth cos you often get abnormal results, so i guess it can happen. hth

I thought I'd seen some news article where it said they shouldn't bother doing a smear at the 6 week check but I can't find it now

I don't think a smear test is standard at the 6 week check up. I have just had my smear test (dd is 4 months), and the nurse phoned up the hospital while I was there because she thought you had to wait 6 months to do a smear. The doctor told her it had been 6 months, but that it had now changed to 3 months.

I was told not to have a smear until at least 12 weeks post birth, I had already had 3 abnormal ones over 2 years before I was pregnant but the one after was fine, i wouldn't worry too much just keep your smear appointments until they come back clear

I was told by my GP not to have a smear until about 20 weeks after giving birth as they had found more people than expected were getting abnormal results.

Hello everyone who replied. Thanks for all your input. I called a nurse at my surgery today and spoke to her about it. She tried to assure me as long as I have another smear in 6 months they will catch whatever is there if it needs catching. Very interesting rules about how soon after childbirth to have smears. I'll have to think and pray about this one. Thanks again.
