Stress Headaches - How Can I Relieve Them?

I am pretty certain my headaches are caused by stress, not ADs now and just wanted to know if there is anyway to relieve them? Painkillers don't seem to work at all, nor did a cold compress. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks x

Quootiepie - do you have time to do something that you enjoy doing? If you have a hobby - for example playing a musical instrument or going out jogging or even just reading a good book - doing that can help relax you.

Relaxation -physical and emotional- is the key to reducing stress headaches - but that's easier said then done.

Or you can look into alternative therapies - such as meditation.

not really a hobby anymore - horse riding was my main hobby but haven't ridden in a few years now. Relaxation - as you say, easier said than done Was going to have a bath last night to relieve it, but by the time DS had dinner, was bathed, put to bed, DH had his shower, it was late and no hot water!

Hi

I get these too, far too often!

I have to drink sweet tea (I hate tea usually) and/or chocolate (I realise this doesn't work for people who's heads get worse with choc!)
I also press my temples, and squeeze the top of my nose (obviously when noone is looking!)
Hot lavender baths are lovely but don't do much for me.
It bloomin hurts though, I can sympathise.

Decent sleep does the trick....but not always available!

Sorry not to be of much use!

PS...

the best remedy I find is a fabulous neck and head massage..... but not always possible!!!

What do they feel like Quootiepie? Any pattern as to when you get them?

I've suffered a lot from these in the past.

Have you tried a painkiller called Syndol? It can make you a bit drowsy but often is very good for getting rid of tension headaches.

winniepoo · 14/05/2007 21:18

regular paracetamol and brufen always helps me!

I take Syndol and they're fab. You can buy them over the counter and Boots do their own version. If you're going to try them just take 1, not 2 as they suggest, the first time as they can knock you out. I give them 20 mins and can feel them kicking in and it's lovely.

I get the headaches because when I'm stressed I clench my jaw and hunch my shoulders and all the muscles in my neck and shoulders tense up. If I know I'm getting stressed I try to remember to relax my jaw and shoulders.

I've just started doing meditation too and that is really good for relaxation.
