newborn with diarrhea

My 12 day old son seems to have diarrhea. Hes breastfeed but have given him a bit of EBM in a bottle too. His poo looks like normal breastfed baby poo, ie yellow, but its really smelly, like he has a stomach upset.

He appears to be fine otherwise, feeding well, but he is doing frequent, really quite smelly poo. He doesnt appear to be dehydrated.

I'm taking him to doctor this afternoon just to be safe, but has anyone else had experience with this in a very new born baby? Hes had it for over 24 hours now.

as far as i know, poo in bf newborns (ive only known bf ones - my own!) can be pretty variable and of itself is nothing to worry about. if there really is nothing else appearing to be wrong, hes probably absolutely fine. his wee gut is still getting used to being in action at all.
good thing youre taking him to a doc anyway - best to let a professional see babies... they can get sick - and recover - with lightening speed!

Mine used to produce mustard around that age, although he didn't go frequently at all which was a bit strange I was told.

I think that as long as he looks OK and responsive things might be fine, but if it reasures you to take him to the doctor, please do.

I was told by a HV that they receive so many calls about mums being concerned about changes in their little ones' poo that sometimes they felt as saying that as long as it didn't glow in the night it was OK. So, the point is, it is quite likely things are OK, but if you feel concerned, well please be aware that you are not the only one worrying about these things and ring them.

Thank you for your messages, very reassuring. The doctor said he was fine for now but to keep an eye on it, and if it persists we will get it tested. thanks for that!
