Appointment for 2nd part of breast screening

3 weeks ago I had my 1st mammogram Today I received a letter today inviting me to a 2nd part of breast screening in 4 weeks time. Obviously I’m very anxious. They did tell me it’s fairly common to be called for a 2nd screening. Anyone have experienced this. How common is it?

Perhaps you could phone them to ask? Maybe they want to give you an ultra sound as well? I'm not sure whether this is a routine part of screening these days.
I had early stage breast cancer in 2010 and the mammogram didn't pick it up as it was so deeply embedded. Thankfully, I'd had breast cysts and had ultra sound in connection with them, when they spotted the cancer.
My experience of the breast care centre was that they were very good and very supportive. I'm sure that they will be able to put you through to the nurses who will be able to explain everything.
I hope it goes well for you.

I just spoken to the screening nurse. She said they will be looking a my left breast. Could be cyst, fibroadenoma . She said sometimes breasts can be quite dense and glandular and and especially difficult to interpret for first screening. She said there is also a possibility they have to do a biopsy. My concerns is the waiting time. Between 1st screening and 2nd screening is 7 weeks. Is this normal waiting time. I’m on the list if there’s a cancellation so hoping to go in before 4th April. Any advice please.

I guess it wil vary by NHS area, but I recall things taking some time with me in 2010/11. I had the lumpectomy in early November and the results of that showed I needed a double mastectomy which took place at the very end of January, so it was quite a slow process even at that stage.

Apart from going private for the initial exploration, I can't see that you can do anything more than you are already doing.

I feel for you though, as the waiting to know is very difficult. Hopefully they'll be able to offer you a cancellation appointment and see you sooner. Have you got someone who will go with you to the appointment? The Biopsy is very quick, but I did feel a bit sorry for myself afterwards.

It's natural to feel anxious at what it may be- but it sounds as though it could be other things apart from breast cancer too. so try to keep an open mind at the moment about what it may be.
Breast cancer seems so common these days. Me and several others in my circle of friends have all had treatment. But we are all well now and enjoying life fortunately.
I hope your appointment goes well for you

In my experience of friends being recalled, it is fairly common to get recalled after your first mammogram. They don’t have a ‘normal’ for you. I’m sure if they were very worried you would have been recalled sooner. Please try not to worry, easier said than done, I know. Of 3 of my friends being recalled, none were cancer.
