Very painful periods

For the last 6 months my periods have got increasingly painful, I am very light for the first 3 days then on the 4th I have severe lower back, stomach and leg cramps. Painkillers don't touch it and I flood my tampon every 2 hours.

My mum had fibroids and ovarian cancer and so I'm wondering if I should get checked out. Last time I went to the gp about this she dismissed me and gave me the pill. I don't have any contraceptive and I'm early 40's is this normal?

It's obviously not normal for you, and if painkillers aren't touching it - yes, please go and get it checked. It could just be the joys of perimenopause, but if you come away with stronger painkillers or tranexamic acid or similar, then that's going to help you. And if it is anything more problematic, then the sonnet you can start treatment, the better.

If your GP is dismissive, it might be worth trying another doctor.

sooner, not sonnet. You can try poetry, but to be honest, I doubt it's going to do much for this issue. Smile

Treatment like pills only treat the symptoms and not the cause.

I would find another GP to talk to and seek a referral at that appointment to a gynaecologist. Endometriosis is a common cause of ongoing and severe period pain and this cannot be ruled out. Painkillers are not always effective with endometriosis and this can also cause heavy bleeding to arise.

It is certainly in your interests to find out exactly why this is happening.

Thank you, I will see a different gp I'm not assuming that because of my Mum I'll be the same but it has crossed my mind.
