Fasting Blood Sugar ...

For complicated reasons, I need to have a fasting blood sugar. How long do I need to have fasted beforehand?

I'm probably going to go for an early morning thing, but am considering other options ...

I had to stop eating after 9pm (I think) for a morning test when I was pregnant. I was allowed black coffee for breakfast though. Early morning is the time to have the appointment though as you don't really have to fast at all, just maybe eat earlier the evening before.

Ack! I thought it was midnight.

I do have an appointment to go in next week at 9:25 or something, but I was thinking of going to the local hospital clinic at 9am tomorrow instead, just to speed things up.

I have just had a fasting glucose tolerance test this morning (similar thing) and had to fast from 10pm last night for an 8am test if that helps.

And the good news was that it is now normal which was not the case 15 months ago. However my HBA1C is a bit high so have to have that tested next year.

Good luck.

You need to fast for 12 hours before the test. Sips of water are fine. This is the advice given at work for all fasting blood tests.

yes 12 hours!

12 hours!

Ok, will start shovelling food in now, stop eating at 9, and go for test at 9am. Gah.

Ok, it really was meant to be 12 hours. I stopped eating at about 9:15 last night, but didn't actually end up getting blood samples taken until 9:30, so that was ok.

(Well, it wasn't ok, it was really unpleasant, I am still a bit foggy from it all ...)
