Hi, my DS2 has just caught chickenpox from DS1, despite being fully bf'd and the doc saying he wouldn't get it...

Any advice about handling? Spots have just appeared today. Alternative remedies particularly welcome!

bathe in a lukewarm bath with bicarb of soda to stop the itching

you can also put oats in teh bath to soothe the skin, tie them up in a muslin and run under the tap.

boots do a calamine and glycerin cream that is much, much nicer than the plain calamine lotion. it stays on better and they enjoy having it rubbed on as it eases the itching a bit.

-can you give piriton syrup at 3m? saves needing to do anything else for itchiness, irritable-ness, upset and general discomfort.
-dont let yr dp pick the spots (grrrr dont ask)
-medised helps them to sleep as well as taking down temp and helping w pain and helps breathing too. much better than calpol imo.
-get a syringe from chemist for giving medicine - then squirt into mouch in small bursts, saves sticky messes with wriggly babies and spoons

poor sausage. my ds1 had it at 5m

my dd had this at 11wks i was told the same now she gets sympathy spots everytime a friend gets it she is 9... the hospital do not understand why. all i can remember doing is cool baths with calamine afterwards

mishw · 01/05/2007 21:54

large glass of wine and a huge chocolate bar!

DD1 had it just after 3rd birthday followed by DD2 aged 4 months (also fully bf). 5 weeks of quarantine

Seriously everyone else has said it all, better now than when he's older.

Also, unlike my own mother remember that he's had it and so isn;t paranoid about getting it for the rest of his life! (just found out that I have it but mum didn't realise bless her!)

thanks folks. oatmeal baths certainly helped DS1 so will try that for DS2 tomorrow. Will go and read up on the bottles in the bathroom cabinet - hadn't thought abt medised. Agree on the calamine cream - much better than the lotion.

my coution re the cream over the lotion is that if you soften the spots they are easier to knock off resulting in scars. best to keep them dry i would think....
could be wrong, but you see my logic, right?
