I was going to do this, but then decided it was too soon (12th May) so I decided to do a Half Marathon in Octob3r instead

MerlinsBeard · 01/05/2007 20:42

me!! 8th July

Used to dance before DS1 was born (and i mean like 7/8 hours a day) but since then hardly any excercise, esp since DS2 was born 2 years ago!!!

I want to run it but i run like phoebe (from friends) and at mo i am hoping to walk run it!

Am running for second chances - which a friend has just been given and my grandad never got

Pixel · 02/05/2007 17:29

I'm doing it July 1st and it's my first go at any event of this kind, apart from 26 miles sponsored on a pony many years ago. I was starting to try and get a bit fitter so that I could run at least part of the way but then I had a bit of an accident (was really lucky not to break my knee) so I haven't been able to do anything for fear of making it worse. Anyway, I'm going with my mum and next-door neighbour who are both pensioners and my sister who has declared that she is 'just going to wear her walking boots' so I guess we won't be rushing anyway!

RosaLuxembourg · 02/05/2007 21:02

Am running all the way round this year - that's the plan anyway - have run/walked it twice before. I am trying to run three times a week now and hope to be able to do it non-stop. My motivation is my brother, who has in remission with stage 4 bowel cancer for the past year, my aunt who is waiting to have radiation treatment for tongue cancer (she had 40% of her tongue removed in Feb), my Dad who died six years ago of a comparatively rare form of tumour, and two ladies I know locally who have died recently leaving young children - one was a mum at eschool and the other was in my Pilates class. She was an incredibly brave woman who came to class every week with her chemo pack strapped to her waist. The least I can do is run 5k.

tiredemma · 02/05/2007 21:03

me!!!!!

really really want to run it.

going to follow that programme, thanks popsycal.

ZZMum · 02/05/2007 21:06

I am doing in June 24 -- last night ran for 10 minutes and then spent 2 hours on life support!! Be good to join this for some motivation!!

Wallace · 02/05/2007 21:15

I am using this 8 week 5k training programme and hoping to do a 5k on july1st. Then I will move onnto this 12 week half marathon programme

ZZMum · 02/05/2007 21:20

oooh 12 week to half marathon -- suddenly my 10 minutes seems to be the start of something bigger....

Wallace · 02/05/2007 21:33

I looked at the half marathon prog first and it said that "The start point would ideally be a runner who can complete a 5km run in 30 to 40 minutes"

So I decided to build up to it slowly

popsycal · 03/05/2007 06:47

wallace - i like that 8 week 5k programme - I like the timed mile thing too. The first few weeks are similar to the one that I am going to follow so I might try a timed mile at the end of my second week....
eeeeek

Wallace · 03/05/2007 07:40

We'll have to post our timed mile times

RosaLuxembourg · 03/05/2007 10:32

Great link Wallace - I will follow that too. Need to find a way of measuring a mile though. I run on local bike/walking trails so can't measure it in the car.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/05/2007 10:53

Good luck you lot. I started with a Race for Life eight years ago and I'm addicted now You're all more than welcome at the MN Runners Club too you know.

Those two programmes are pretty good Wallace. The tempo stuff on the half marathon one is very useful. I hate speedwork with a passion but it definetely helps 'step up' your speed and stamina.

Hope you've all got decent shoes and sports bras [not that I particularly need the latter lol]. And enjoy it!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/05/2007 10:54

Rosa - there's a site you can use to measure your route. I'll go find a link.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/05/2007 10:56

Here's one

And another

RosaLuxembourg · 03/05/2007 12:35

Cool sites Smbk. Thanks very much.

CheesyFeet · 03/05/2007 12:41

oooh can I join in?

I did RFL last year but walked round in 1hr6mins pushing dd in her buggy. I'm hoping to run at least some of the course this year. Training not going so well atm and I need a kick up the arse.

27th June - Peterborough

Well I just did my fourth 'outing' and inspired by the timing a mile......I timed a mile...

I did walk 1 minute then run 2 minutes until i ran a mile in 12:42 - was quite pleased. Then I ran back home taking a couple of little short cuts aqnd did it in just under 24 minutes (with a couple of the way home walk bits being 1.5 mins)

Feeling quite proud

I'm doing the Croydon one - May 13th (yikes, only 10 days away!)

Won't be running it though (shin splints and 4 stone overweight!!)

I'm hoping to walk it in under an hour and a quarter.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 03/05/2007 17:35

Me on 13th of May.

I think its too late for training programmes

Wallace · 03/05/2007 20:26

Good luck stripeyknickersspottysocks! I uess that is what you will be wearing doing the run?

Well done popsycal! I am still on my first week, but will let you know when the time comes.

saggar - thanks for those links, I had been wondering how I could measure my route too, thought I might have to venture onto roads where people would see me
I may join your runners thread when I get further into the programme. I am going to pop in to ask about running shoes. I need recommendations for a pair of trainers that won't break the bank, and also come in a size 3!

RosaLuxembourg · 09/05/2007 10:25

Hows the training going everyone? I did a short run after my aerobics class last night but need to get a proper training progamme underway - nine weeks to go!

popsycal · 10/05/2007 20:17

Thought I would just bump this up.

I am still getting out three times a week. Tonight was 2 mins walk, 3 mins run (5 times). I did an unofficial measured mile and it was 9:42

I am quite pleased.

I am now obsessing whenever I go out in the car to find new one mile routes. The mile measurer switch (that's a technical term by the way!!!) has never had so much use!

How is everyone else?
