Hayfever(???) in Toddlers

I have just done a quick search and can't find anything relevant - just a load of stuff for adults. Dd has been off her food for a few days and has a VERY runny nose - clear mucus - so I just thought she had a bad cold but today I noticed that she had tears runing down her cheeks at one point, altho she hadn't been crying - and she has also sneezed a few times. She is defintely atopic so going to be prone to such things ( is dairy allergic) and dh has asthma/hayfever etc but I've not seen any references to hayfever in toddlers anywhere. Do you think she might have it? If so what remedies ( if any) might be appropriate. We live in the country so she has certainly been exposed to pollen etc- she goes out into the fields looking at the sheep with her dad quite regularly.

how old is your dd,both my ds have hayfever,they are 6 and 4 and display the same symptoms as you describe with the younger one rubbing his eyes so much they are red raw and bulging.the eldest has asthma,allergies etc so its not surprising for him really. i give them both piriton syrup which you can use from one year i also use a homeopathic remedy from boots from the new era range.

Boots do a non-drowsy antihistamine syrup or there are Medised and Piriton which do tend to cause drowsiness. My DD (3) occasionally suffers the same way as does her older brother (6). I think you can get something prescribed by the doctor (might be Zirtek) if the problem is really bad but you could try sunglasses for her eyes and some vaseline around her nostrils (stops the pollen going up) if you want to avoid drugs.

Dd is only 18 months. I'm now wondering if it is just a bad cold - but would that make her eyes run?

My ds (aged 4), over the last month or so, has started sniffing all the time and sneezing with more regularity. The sniffing is driving us mad and we have booked a doctors appt to look into it. Could it be hay fever this early?

My ds was showed symptoms of Hay fever and Asthma when he was 10mths old. They said they wouldn't be able to tell until he was a wee bit older (12mths+). He definitely has a 'tendency to wheeze' as they called it. I was given a normal Salbutamol inhaler to give to him if he was wheezing (very difficult to do with a wriggling toddler!!) and liquid antihistamines to help with the more common Hay Fever symptoms. It does sound like it could be Hay Fever, but it's a bit early in the year (if you live in the UK) for Grass Pollen.

She may be allergic to the Tree Blossom that is out just now. It's just not fair, is it!! I know that I dread summers now. However, when I was a child my Hay Fever was worse, but it NEVER got me down or hindered me at all. I've just turned into a light-weight now I'm an adult.

DD and I are really suffering, itchy eyes, runny nose etc. look like we are crying all the time!

If you don't want to dope your son, I would try the homeopathic tablets by New Era. They are tiny and dssolve on the tiongue, they are tastless too. My friends son had them from 2 years of age and they seemed to work.

Clarityn is very good, but we baoth have Neo clarityn which is prescription only.

Hay fever is early this year, but so is the pollen, it is the birch and larch, doesn't usually start until may.

Its the same in our house. I'm giving ds piriton syrup and it seems to be helping. Unfortunately for me there doesn't seen to be anything, there's the stuff that sends me drowsy and there's the stuff that's without the drowsy aspect but that sends me high as a kite, great feeling but no good for everyday life lol. I can't even put my clothes out on the line as I end up with rashes everywhere. At least its not as bad as a few years ago when I had to have an inhaler. The piriton incidentally is helping with ds's eczema as well.

Thank you for your replies. Looks like it might be a mild case then. I would be interested in using the homeopathic remedies. Is New Era the same company who make the teething granules you can buy in Holland & Barratt?

It's either New era, or Weleda, but any of the homeopathic tablets should be okay. There are always little information booklets next to them in Boots telling which ones you should use, but the ones we had were in a blue and white plastic pot and were specifically labelled for hayfever. HTH
