Hi
I'm about to start this at 10mg for nerve pain. (Actually I've been putting it off as I hate side effects)
Just wondered if anyone can offer any advice please?
I've read so much about it.
Thanks

It is quite a small dose and IME it works.
Read the leaflet in the pack and follow the instructions.
Dont mix with alcohol.

RedCarsGoFaster · 04/02/2018 12:42

It helped my pain levels, but it took a week for the sleep effects to die down. The first morning, I fell into the wall of my bedroom and couldn't keep my feet under me, I was so out of it! That wore off about midday, having taken it at 10pm.

WorldPeasAndSweetcorn · 04/02/2018 12:42

I think I was on the same dosage and the only side effect I recall was sleeping very deeply at night. Definitely take it just before bed!

Silvercatowner · 04/02/2018 12:48

Yes, I had that dose for IBS and then for arthritis pain. It works! At that low dose side effects are minimal.

Ihavepatrick · 04/02/2018 12:55

I take 10mg at 6/7pm to help me sleep. I like it but have wild random dreams when I'm on it.

PotatoesOfTheCarribean · 04/02/2018 12:56

My GP told me to take it by 8pm, as it can make you quite groggy the next day initially. If you take it very late evening you'll possibly feel like a zombie if you have to get up early. You do get used to that quite quickly though.

It's amazing for nerve pain. Even 10mg can have big effect, and the sleep is amazing.

FinallyFree123456789 · 04/02/2018 13:04

I had this my nerve pain in my back. I was taking 20mg - it was awful. Side effects; tired, hallucinating, nightmares.
I stopped taking them Whilst I was on holiday and the pharmacist out there gave me Tramadol - came back to the UK and my doctor gave me them on prescription without hesitation.
Give them a try and see if they work for you - my pain meds were trial and error - I had at least 4 different types until I found Tramadol when in Cyprus :-)

UnimaginativeUsername · 04/02/2018 13:06

I was on it for arthritis pain. It did help a bit (although I needed a much higher dose than 10mg) but the side effects were not worth it. It gave me the most awful dry mouth, which caused constant really painful mouth ulcers and I could barely eat.

MrsJayy · 04/02/2018 13:06

I take it and it really works there is some side effects I have not experienced like the pp but it did make me feel woozy i take it no later than 7pm and found I am fine in the morning and i get a great sleep.

UnimaginativeUsername · 04/02/2018 13:07

That said, the tramadol they put me on instead was much worse. Dizziness, vomiting, skin so itchy I’d scratch til I bled in my sleep.

I take 25mg at 7pm, so that I'm functioning from 6.30am the next morning. The side effects take a bit of getting used to, and again if you increase a dose (I started on 10mg).

It's not as effective for nerve pain as pregabalin (for me), but does help me get a reasonable nights sleep. It doesn't do anything for the pain during the day, so I'm a bit unsure why it gets prescribed for nerve pain, when generally something to stop the pain during the day when you're trying to get stuff done would be more helpful. But, for help sleeping, it's OK.

MrsJayy · 04/02/2018 13:12

I have fibro and other pain issues i used to rattle with painkillers i was on tramadol and hated it my skin used to crawl and i felt spaced out.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 04/02/2018 13:13

I was prescribed 10mg to help me sleep, which it did but i had a bad reaction to it, i woke up vomiting, barely able to walk and felt like my head was going to explode. Made me very wary of taking any meds

MagentaRocks · 04/02/2018 13:13

I have it to help me sleep as I can’t shut my mind down. I love it. I don’t take it every night but it definitely makes a difference to my fatigue.

flyingfromage · 04/02/2018 13:15

If the side effects are bad ask for nortryptyline. I take it and find it very good, still have bad days but tried to come off it last year and pain levels went through the roof so I know it works.

larry55 · 04/02/2018 13:18

I am on 40mg a day and I find it helps me sleep as well as keep sciatica pain at bay. I was having great trouble sleeping before having it. I had been on 10mg before getting sciatica for neuropathy as a side effect of diabetes.

TheLesserWeevil · 04/02/2018 13:26

10 mg for nerve pain here too. It helps a lot and I've had no unpleasant side effects, but I do need to take it by 7pm in order to be able to get up the next day.

opalmum · 04/02/2018 13:33

I take it for trigemminal neuralgia. I find I need to take it before 7.30pm (I set my phone alarm to remind me) in order to be able to function by 8am but you'll have to see what works best for you. For me, it seems accumulative. It takes at least a week to really notice the effect. It really helps me to have an uninterrupted good nights sleep, if nothing else. And my anxiety seems worse if I don't take it, so that's a nice bonus. The main annoying thing is not being able to drink alcohol. You may have to come up with some imaginative responses when -so called- friends ask -again and a blardy again- why you are not drinking. But that might not trouble you.

loveyoutothemoon · 04/02/2018 13:37

I used to take it occasionally for arthritis and nerve pain. Worked amazingly, drifted off to sleep so quickly but 10 mg was making me so drowsy the next day, had trouble driving, even taking it early evening.

loveyoutothemoon · 04/02/2018 13:38

And it worked a treat the very first time I took it.

Mummytron · 04/02/2018 13:51

Thanks all.
Yes it's the side effects that really scare me.
I know it sounds crap but no alcohol? It's about the only enjoyment I get nowadays!! I don't drink much.

@magentarocks

Ask your doctor for circadin. It's melatonin and and turns off your thoughts at bedtime. Excellent. DS has asd and frets at night and this turns off the ruminating process and lets him get to sleep

GertrudeCB · 04/02/2018 14:07

I've been on this dosage for about 10 months. I take it about an hour before bedtime and am able to wake up properly at 6 am.
I don't drink much but when I do I don't have my amitriptyline that night.
