Hi
I'm about to start this at 10mg for nerve pain. (Actually I've been putting it off as I hate side effects)
Just wondered if anyone can offer any advice please?
I've read so much about it.
Thanks

Gabapentin I got titrated on in hospital and it worked within a dose but I was put on 1200 mg from 300mg in hospital. I was really hyper active but the effects wore off.
Amatryptaline helps in then evening when I take it.
You need a long term plan not just meds.
Don't let them fob you off with pills.

I get my pain from lunchtime too. It seems to get worse through the day and it's exasperated
By standing still

Mamahen2 · 04/02/2018 18:16

I'm on 75 mg helps bit with nerve pain only side effect I get is if I take it too early I get tired fast do take with hotb drink or they stuck in your throat I take mine about hour before bed hope that helps

Mummytron · 04/02/2018 18:36

disappointed can I ask you what your problem is? I'm the same where if I stand still or sit still for too long it's so much worse. I'm finding I can less around the house, not much at all actually and it's frustrating. Mine is ankylosing spondylitis

Mine is ankylosing spondylitis too. It’s a joy. I get very sore at work (particularly in the afternoons, because I have a sitting on my arse most of the time job) and also when I’m trying to sleep.

The amitriptyline really might make a big difference for you. It was helping me, but the dry mouth was a problem. It may not be an issue for you. It isn’t a problem for everyone.

Hey @Mummytron
I have got damaged nerves near my kidney and it is pain that feels like kidney stones there and then the pain is like a dull deep ache in the middle and up into the left side of my chest under my armpit. It stops just near my boob.

I had damage in my back from a nephrostomy (urine bag direct into kidney) from when I was pregnant.
The nerves there are all connected to the ones that go up into chest.

I had Botox in the area to help and it was good but it only lasted 4 weeks.

Steroids and local anaesthetic have helped a small amount.
I use Lidocaine patches which are amazing and also have pethidine pills. I went to see a private consultant in London and have arranged to have a paravertable block on Thursday.

I'm emotionally drained and exhausted by being sick. I have been this ill for two years. Unable to do much including cooking for example as it involves standing stil.
Are you under the pain team?

Mummytron · 04/02/2018 19:37

diappointed sorry to hear that. Interesting that you mention pain up to the armpit. My right armpit has been painful and I wonder if it's linked. I've been at rheumatology for 4 years and been taking anti inflammatories but they have stopped them as it's not active. This pain is like muscle spasm/nerve pain which shoots across my back and I have to hold the side as it's so painful.

I took this for nerve pain too and I second having no booze - as someone who tried to drink anyway, the first and only time was pretty horrific...I felt hungover the first few days I took it but this soon stopped, one side effect I got and did not expect was sleep paralysis. Personally, I found the side effects too much and now try to control my pain in other ways. Having said that, my mum was also prescribed for a different reason, and she had no side effects (other than falling asleep ten mins after taking it).

Jon66 · 04/02/2018 19:42

I found it stopped the pain at 30mg after about a fortnight. Am on 40 mg now. Have tried coming off it but the pain is controlled so well and pain kicks in after I've dropped the dose down and I don't have any noticeable side effects so . . .. Couldn't live well without it.

dissapointedafternoon · 04/02/2018 19:54

Yes it's lame I know but you have to get on with things. I would cry forever otherwise. I feel robbed.

The nerves are 100% connected in the armpit. I would also suggest getting on the pain teams list too to supplement the rheumatology aspect of things. You poor thing. I feel so sorry for you.
I hope you get something that works for you soon.

Don't give up hope. Consider some steroid injections too.

I take 100mg a minimum of twice a day.

OohOohMrPeevly · 04/02/2018 20:40

I take 10mg and it's great - I usually take mine with a glass of wine - didn't even realise you weren't supposed to! Anyway for me it's brilliant and I haven't had any side effects although if I take 20mg I feel a big groggy the next day.

Pollaidh · 04/02/2018 20:59

It works for me, think I started on 10mg and now take 20mg. Take it around 8pm at latest, or you will be very groggy in the morning. Should help you sleep as well as get rid of nerve pain.

I think I had a very dry throat when I started taking it, so make sure you take water to bed. Side effects died down quite quickly, except possibly a tendency to put on weight, though that might be down to age etc, and if you're able to move around more, that would counter this effect.

Mummytron · 04/02/2018 21:26

I bottled it tonight 🙄 why am I so scared?

MrsJayy · 04/02/2018 21:42

Scared of the unknown but honestly it is ok try again tomorrow take it about half 6 and lie down on your bed if you start to feel iffy but i don't feel any wooziness till bedtime

MrsJayy · 04/02/2018 21:43

I drink mineral water or cola Blush the fizz seems to help the dry mouth.

dissapointedafternoon · 05/02/2018 20:17

Have you taken it tonight?

I take 100-125mg a time night, helps reduce my pain levels but doesn't stop it, and helps with depression / anxious thoughts; still have insomnia at times though, and can function (well as much as I can when limited by ME & fibro) having taken it. Side effects now is really only dry mouth, has built up over time though so not like started on big dose to start with.
I've recently had pre-gabalin added for nerve pain from crushed radial nerves due to spinal issue, only on 25mg at night for that, and side effects far worse, made me feel utterly suicidal for first few weeks, and still gives me intrusive self harm thoughts; but helps with nerve pain to enough of a level to put up with the thoughts as beats the extreme nerve pain.
Try them, give it a few weeks to settle in and then make an assessment, you may find you also don't get side effects and helps with the pain levels

Brighteyes27 · 05/02/2018 22:03

I took amitriptaline and something els for nerve pain it helped take the edge off the pain and allowed me to get some sleep as I had shoulder pain.
But I did feel quite dazed the next day and felt my concentration affected and I certainly would not have wanted to drive more than ten ministers. But my pain was unbearable so it was the lesser of two evils.

Elusiveone · 05/02/2018 23:40

I am on one a night for a trapped nerve and its working really well. The majority of the pain has gone but still odd twinges. No side effects. Great stuff

MotherofaSurvivor · 05/02/2018 23:48

I was on this for years for sleep problems. It really does knock you out. 10mg is low but if you've never had it, it will put you to sleep. You supposedly can't build up a tolerance but I did over a long period of time.

I would advise against driving or looking after a very young whilst first taking it^^ but I expect your doc has gone over all of that.

MotherofaSurvivor · 05/02/2018 23:54

I am now on 7 day slow release Buprenorphine Patches and they are farrrrrrrrrrrrt better than any other painkiller I've ever had! Absolutely no fatigue or side effects. Amazing things. Might be worth asking to try them?

rainsbows30 · 06/02/2018 04:36

Mummytron ive bottled it too. My health anxiety is so severe I'm also medicine phobic after nearly dying from citalopram. I'm also a mum of two young daughters and I'm a ks1 teacher. I absolutely cannot be spacey/groggy.

Mummytron · 06/02/2018 16:08

No I didn't take it last night but more because my hubby works shifts and wasn't home until 1:30am so was a bit worried about the kids. He's home tonight and I'm having such pain today I think I've just got to go for it. Wish me luck, I'm terrified. I really appreciate everyone taking time to help me x
