Tired of daily IBS symptoms

Everyday I have discomfort, bloating and pain. It's been like this for 4 years. It's driving me crazy! Any one tried anything that reduces symptoms?

Have you tried the fodmap diet, I find certain foods really trigger me recently for example cauliflower rice had me doubled over on the floor in agony x

gamerchick · 31/01/2018 22:24

Yep a food and drink diary and a bit of experimenting.

I’ve found I can’t drink any kind of alcohol apart from cider and then only 3 drinks.

It’s done wonders for my waistline but it makes me sad! I can’t eat a lot of fibre or fruit either.

windthruleaves · 31/01/2018 22:27

I've tired eliminating foods. I can't drink alcohol, can't eat anything spicy and some fruits seem to make it worse. I've tried peppermint and other remedies. Can't take buscopan gives me double vision!

FODMAP. Identify the issues, and you're half way there. Sounds like you know some triggers - do you still eat them?

WeeM · 31/01/2018 22:30

Fizzy drinks are the worst for me, bloats me days. And sometimes eating too fast if I’m really hungry. Apart from that it’s a mystery! I really should try the fodmap diet too but I can’t bear the thought of it!

windthruleaves · 31/01/2018 22:34

I don't still eat the foods I've identified. I steer clear of coffee and fizzy drinks, which is difficult for me! Some nights I can't get comfortable to sleep. I never used to have IBS it started after my mum was diagnosed with cancer

My IBS cleared up when I started low carbing. I didn't do it for that reason - it was about losing weight - but it was a very positive (and unexpected) additional benefit.

windthruleaves · 31/01/2018 22:40

I'm willing to try anything! Anything at all! It interferes with my daily life too much.

Yes actually I quite often low carb before a holiday and it definitely helps me

RaspberryCheese · 31/01/2018 22:44

Ideas..

Low carb
Increase water intake
A tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil every other day

Flywheel · 31/01/2018 22:48

I have ordered one of these. Haven't received it yet but I'm pinning lots of hopes on it

I did fodmap and having low lactose did the trick for me. I have occasional bouts but not like before.

ProfessorSprout · 31/01/2018 22:51

The colon is like a second brain, linked to stress and emotion.
I had a colonic irrigation recently and it did me wonders, not only on IbS type symptoms but education from the person who did it. She was a retired bowel nurse and knew her stuff very well.

Bread, meat and dairy can be a nightmare.

brusselsprout5 · 31/01/2018 22:54

Try the nemechek protocol. Olive oil, fish oil & a herbal supplement called inulin. Don't eat ANY veg oils, or if you do have an extra spoon of extra virgin olive oil. Don't take probiotics. Amazing. Has changed my life! IBS gone.

windthruleaves · 31/01/2018 23:05

The digestive tracker looks interesting. I've got some good ideas to try so many thanks for all the advice. Would love to not look like I'm having a baby some days with the bloating! And to wear clothes I don't have to pick out to hide my varying stomach size! Grin

I’m exactly the same and it’s making me so depressed. Constant gurgling and rumbling of my guts. I’m bloated and really windy every bloody evening, getting scared to eat!
Low fodmap has helped me in the past but isn’t helping atm (Im probably not being strict enough!) Am thinking of low curbing to see if it helps, not sure what I’d eat though?
I’ve had a really stressful time recently, I really think that my digestive system is my weak spot when it comes to stress and anxiety Sad

SingingGoldfinch · 01/02/2018 11:28

My ibs symptoms eased when I started on the 5:2 diet. I also started taking probiotics at the same time so can't be sure whether it was one or other or the combination which has helped but it's definitely much better.

WeeM · 01/02/2018 13:01

@twoweekcruise stress/anxiety def sets me off quite badly. I had a terrible period where my stomach was bloated and sore for ages and then realised I was having a crap time in work too.

lettuceWrap · 01/02/2018 13:35

I had gut problems, digestive problems, a lot of pain - diagnosed with IBS when tests turned up nothing. Also headaches, migraines and some other issues I was told weren’t linked. I had those issues for over 20 years, gradually worsening from my late teens.

Low carb had a huge impact, most of the symptoms disappeared (low carb is by default low(er) fodmaps, low(er) gluten and grains, many people have issue with the insoluble fibre in grain foods, and fodmaps.

These days I’m completely gluten free and fairly low fodmap - no IBS and almost never a headache or migraine...

Imo it is well worth doing something like whole30 or Paleo autoimmune protocol for a month or two as you’ll most likely learn a lot more about what your trigger foods (or combinations) are, than randomly cutting things out one at a time.

lettuceWrap · 01/02/2018 13:38

Btw, pp mentioning stress, anxiety- there’s evidence that it may be gut issues can cause stress and anxiety... not always the other way round!
