on the back of my hand
I was gardening but did not feel an injury . I did not even notice it till dp said whats that?? He had a look and said it was not bone, felt fluid filled and movable and was probably a bruise
But that was yesterday and today it's not blue at all and harder. It does not hurt what the hell is it!???

Perhaps a ganglion.

southeastastra · 26/04/2007 18:53

could it be a thorn?

NotanOtter · 26/04/2007 18:53

ganglion??
would a thorn cause huge swelling?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 26/04/2007 18:56

if it's deep it could swell, have no idea what a ganglion is

NotanOtter · 26/04/2007 18:59

would a ganglion come up quickly?

A ganglion is a fluid filled lump that can occur either gradually or suddenly on the back of your hand. They can disppear without treatment. Sometimes surgery is required if they are problematic. An old theory is to whack it with a bible.

TheWoman · 26/04/2007 19:04

I agree with The Ganglion Theory.

NotanOtter · 26/04/2007 19:18

i had one just below my knee when i was a child, went as suddenly as it appeared. and have also had one on my foot, first time it was there for 6yrs, it has reappeared recently. makes shoe wearing a bit of a pain at times.

NotanOtter · 26/04/2007 19:28

brimfull · 26/04/2007 19:30

mine is on my index finger ,gp seemed very unimpressed.Said to come back when it was a real hindrance or scraping on the ground.
My frined had one on the back of her hand for yrs, think it just disappeared .
Stayed the same size.

misdee · 26/04/2007 19:36

yup 6 years. docs didnt know what it was. i had potions put on it, creams, went through blood tests etc. we used to have to do PE barefooted at secondry school and the gym teacher asked me what was wrong with my foot. after that i got a letter to wear my trainers in gym. When it reappeared the other week i groaned as it was really large when i was younger. this time its smaller.

friendlyedjit · 26/04/2007 19:42

does sound like a ganglion.
I have one that goes up and down in size and occasionally hurts- especially when I prod it to see if its getting bigger!!!!
Usually just where the back of the hand meets wrist...why don't you get doc to confirm if you're there for anything else, or if you're worried. How long they last? How long is a piece of string? Can be around for ever- as long as not painful or interfering with movement, I would probably leave well enough alone as they can have a habit or recurring even after treatment

honeybrown · 26/04/2007 19:43

I'd be heading for the bible!

BettySpaghetti · 26/04/2007 19:44

Someone in my pilates class had one on her wrist/back of hand but she had it removed surgically.

NotanOtter · 26/04/2007 21:07

i am tempted to wop it with a bible...might have to be a dictionary in our house
