beige, explosive disgusting smelling poo in 17 months old for 3 days

I've done a search, but I can only find lots of green poo stories.

My 17 month old ds had a bowel explosion twice on Sunday night (usually a once in the morning sort of chap), both were noisy, smelly and very pale (think ready brek but with sulphur smell). Since then at least 3 a day all enormous, right down the leg, fill your slippers jobs. He has an incredible pain threshold (which I've posted about before) but he does seem to feel discomfort immediately before (which given he can fall off a slide and crack his head open, or cut 4 teeth at once and sleep through the night, is enough to worry me).

He is breastfed, so I am happy to just keep rehydrating him and see what happens, but how long before I consider ringing the doctor? He seems like a quieter version of himself and has got tired easily these last couple of days.

i would see a dr because after three days anyway its wise to seek professional help and it could be a bowel problem which needs to be checked ..i`m not 100% sure what the signs were for coeliac disease but i dont want to go frightening you with awful thoughts but i would get it checked

This sounds like something my dd1 had, does the poo look like cake mixture? If so its something called giardiasis and it is caused by drinking dirty water, try going on nhs direct website for help but you will probably have to take him to the docs for some medicine. Hope this helps.

Dd had this when she was 19 months old. She's 21 months now. She had a stomach bug which for some reason didn't make her sick, just had these horrible poos, exactly as you're describing. She was also more tired than usual. I think it took almost a week to get back to normal. Sometimes she had them in the night so explosively that they soaked through all her clothes and sleeping bag and cot sheets. It made her miserable every time she did a poo and she got a sore bottom with it too.

Yep my ds has had this too. My GP diagnosed Rota Virus. He was ill for about 10 dayes

alison222 · 27/07/2004 15:37

My DD (17mths) just had some sort of stomach bug a bit like tis - it lasted 6 days. However I was sure it was her version of a bug as DS and DH had a 24 hr sickess and Diorhhea bug just after this started as did my mum and my neighbours who all came into contact with her immediately beforehand
If you aren't really worried leave it a day or two as my doctor won't take it seriously until its been going on for at least a week if they are not actually really ill with soemthing like that
Obvioulsy if you are worried about hydration/fever/ other illness symptoms i guess you'd be straight down to see the doctor.
I guess then my advice is go with your instincts - sorry thats not too much help is it?

toddlerbob, my 2yr dd has just recovered from smelly explosive poos just like you have described. I took her to the docs who confirmed a viral tummy bug. Advised to keep her hydrated but no apple juice (her fave) as the fructose aggrevates the condition. Very dilute orange juice was OK. Doc also advised to use cotton wool/water for cleaning her sore bum, as wipes sting. Used Drapelene for sore bum and her nappy rash cleared up in 4 days. The poos calmed down after 7 days.

toddlerbob · 27/07/2004 22:03

Poo does indeed look like cake mixture - even has raisins in it! I'm still pontificating whether to take him to the docs. I will see what this morning's nappy looks like and then decide. Thanks for your replies.

Toddlerbob, how's your DS now??

toddlerbob · 02/08/2004 22:32

Hi, Another couple of days of the beige stuff, but now back to normal. A snack bar that he eats has recently changed its ingredients and snuck some apple puree in, which I don't think was helping. As soon as I realised I stopped it and he went back to normal.
I also gave him lots of brightly coloured food, pumpkin etc. because I knew if that didn't come out the way it went in it was time to go to the docs. He had a big 14 hour sleep the night he got better so I think he was shaking off a bug.
