What should I do if dd has a little bone stuck in her throat?

She had fish for dinner. Suddenly she was crying about a sharp thing stuck in her throat. She wasn't choking on it, but something was bothering her a lot (she's 5 btw).

Gave her lots of water then we tried some dry crusty bread to swallow. She said it still hurt, but I cant be sure if it's gone now or just scratched inside.

Surprisingly she's now sleeping and seems ok. How on earth will the doctor get it out if it's still there tomorrow?

I presume it will gradually work it's way down the throat won't it.

That's what I was hoping too.

Erm -if still uncomfortable I would take her to the nearest paediatric A & E in the morning-if impacted can lead to an abscess. They may need to do an X-ray or look down her throat (BTW I am a radiologist)

Ring NHS Direct and see what they say. I had this as an adult and they advised me to go to casualty - which i did, and they got it out quite easily.

Thanks everyone. All sorted no problems after a trip to A&E

Right...what next!

Too late for you TinyGang, but for anyone searching the archives for this sort of prob, I've heard that eating bread can help dislodge it.

Glad it's all sorted for you TG

this happened to me at junior school. I went to A & E and they 'fished' it out with a ong pair of tweezers.
