Is there a very sore viral throat infection doing the rounds

I'm feeling sooo sorry for myself Blush I haven't had a sore throat like this since I can remember.
Everyone I know seems to have sore throat as well (they seem much better patients than me though)
Throat is agony, I haven't eaten since Thursday, drinking liquids with great pain. 2 hourly have ibuprofen and paracetamol - today I have upped it to co-codamol. Have a temp (it's really not that bad at 38.7 but I'm feeling particularly sorry for myself) and stuffed sinus with accompanying headache. Glands are massive!

Also have a sick 1 year old who just wants mummy so I can't even wallow on sofa with a good film, although my poor husband is trying to keep her away as much as possible.
Anyone else have this? I'm assuming it's something viral and I just need to put my big girl pants on, but I think it feels like man flu Grin

Yes! I'm just getting over it. Felt like razor blades in my throat all over Christmas.

Ibuprofen helped more than paracetamol
And hot drinks were quite soothing

calmandbright · 31/12/2017 09:48

Yes Sad my whole family has had it. My throat was raw on Xmas day - I choked down dinner Angry

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/12/2017 09:51

Yes. Eventually got rid of it on Xmas Eve having had it on and off since the start of November. (Which is probably not what you want to hear)

Littlemissindifferent · 31/12/2017 09:52

I think it may be a strep throats infection, will last about a week. Do you have white spots at the back of your throat?

passmethewineplease · 31/12/2017 09:53

Yes. I still have mine and it's been about a week.. Sad

DD has also started with a cough this morning so think she's next..

DoinItForTheKids · 31/12/2017 09:58

Yes! Came on Boxing Day eve in the form of coughing. Segued into nasty cough, horrifically sore swollen throat, fever, phlegm, phlegm and more phlegm, more coughing. It's now a full 5 days later and I still feel like absolute death. I still have a fever and now both my ears hurt so might be heading towards double ear infection. I've got the energy of a lettuce leaf that's gone through a full boil wash cycle!

I honestly think it's been the flu because it's properly laid me low - DD had similar but just with a cough and bit of a sore throat but she headed it off after 3 days. I can't get rid of this.

Yesterday afternoon my sinuses kept weirdly draining and refilling accompanied by the MOST violent sneezes which involved my entire body - I looked like I was having a seizure - if I'd been driving I'd have probably crashed.

I'm not sure if I'll be ok for work on Tuesday I really don't and that will have been 7 days. I'm even not eating that much and that is NOT like me as anyone who knows me would tell you!

Make it stop!!!!! Rafals you are not filling me with hope here!

strep throat tends to need antibiotics as it is bacterial isn't it?. We assumed ds1 had a viral sore throat (this was in the summer) but after three days it was not getting any better and we called doctor (in Austria) who immediately prescribed antibiotics. Ds1's throat was full of pus. He had a fever and vomiting at the beginning before sore throat kicked in. I wish we had given him antibiotics earlier tbh. Think it was amoxycillin? can't be sure as it was foreign, but it worked, he felt much better almost immediately.

Nettleskeins · 31/12/2017 21:43

if you google "strep throat untreated" - you get complications of sinusitis and otitis (ear and sinus infections) Which need antibiotics. In fact it says one of problems of strep throat is getting people to seek treatment!

Aisforahole · 31/12/2017 21:47

Yes. Same symptoms as you describe. Developed flu and now have sinusitis. Sad

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2017 21:49

I came down with a nasty throat virus on Christmas Day. Thankfully it's just about cleared off now, but I've given it to DH who started with it last night. My symptoms were a very sore throat, a slight fever and extreme tiredness.

I found the best painkiller was soluble solpadeine alternated with ibruprofen.

confuddledconfudle · 31/12/2017 22:03

Ugh now I don't know what to do. Our out of hours service is soo over stretched at the moment (36 hour wait on call back from GP over Christmas period) so really don't want to be annoying them with a viral throat infection which just needs time to clear up.
However I did consider strep throat. Can't see pus but then can't really see back of throat as is so swollen. Dh still has sore throat 6 days later. He visited his Mum who did see out of hours GP service today and was told she had tonsillitis (dh doesn't have tonsils) and now I'm wondering can strep throat be that contagious. Dh was first infected, then me, we visited family on Boxing Day, they now all have it. DH visited his Mum day after and she now has diagnosed tonsillitis. Aghh I hate being ill.
I also work for NHS (not medical) and have a clinic in 2 days time and I don't know I'm I'm going to be fit for it and don't want to pass it on. But with sickness management I can't afford to be off ill. I had norovirus last month and we are only allowed 3 sickness periods in 12 months. So that would be 2 illnesses in 2 months Confused

Oh and bonus is dd (1) has been in contact with her cousins who have just came out in chicken pox spots so expecting that for next week and I've just found half a molar down (explains her being moody)

Thanks for everyone else experiencing this horrendous sore throat

@DoinItForTheKids

That is exact same as mine, started same time as well. I could of wrote your post myself.
Thought I felt ok this morning, went to meet a friend for a hot chocolate, (although it did take me two hours to get ready due to sheer tiredness) once I got there I felt even worse thought I was going to pass out at one point.
Being 6 months pregnant isn't helping either 🤢 feeling extra sorry for myself!

alletik · 31/12/2017 22:23

Yes! We've had it here...

Sickness and fever followed by sore throats and DD got an ear infection to boot, so she's on anti biotics now. DD and I are only on the sore throats...

DoinItForTheKids · 31/12/2017 23:00

@Lemonmuffin837 I can't imagine how you managed to get out of bed let alone out for a hot chocolate, especially pregnant! I conducted my first visit to the local supermarket today - I must have looked a right state! For some reason I desperately needed chicken tikka masala (no rice). I'd not eaten properly for three days prior to that!

Realitea · 01/01/2018 12:15

Yes! Got it a week before Christmas and it was the most sore throat I’ve ever had. Couldn’t eat either. I’m still unwell as it’s gone to my chest and I’m so wheezy. Still really tired and slept most of the Christmas holidays Sad

PurpleBoot · 02/01/2018 12:40

DD1 had this before Christmas - aching, temp, swollen glands and very sore throat. It turned into scarlet fever, with a red rash and really swollen face, so it was a strep infection. I then got strep throat a few days later. Just finished the antibiotics. Just mentioning as important to watch out for the rash, and spots in mouth, with a bright red tongue! It needs antibiotics.

LadyChatterlysLoofah · 02/01/2018 12:43

Exactly as PPs. Week of utter misery, unable to sleep for agonising coughing fits too. Still deathly tired a fortnight later. Found most relief in ice cold drinks rather than hot.

allglitteredout · 02/01/2018 13:33

I got this Christmas Eve, nearly everyone I know has had it. I am still suffering, it did go away for 2 days but now come back and I feel as though I need to take the top of my head of and clean all the junk out. Throat is killing me and ears and glands swollen. Paracetomal, Ibrupofren and Fishermans friends. Sorry about spelling, first day back at work and I just can't be arsed with anyone or anything.
