3 week old with temperature

My dd has had a mild temperature for about 24 hours now. I took her to the doctors this morning and they couldnt find any obvious signs for it and to come back later this afternoon if i was worried. I am worried by the fact that it is unusual for a baby this young to have a temperature as they should be covered by my immunity. She hasn't got any worse today but she still feels hot. What would you do?

Go back to the docs

Call NHS direct and ask for their opinion, or take her to A&E if you are worried, drs have been known to miss things so dont feel you are being silly.

Babies are not very good at regulating their temp so it could be anything from the heat in your house to maybe a mild cold.

How is she otherwise?

At three weeks old I would be unhappy with the doctor just fobbing you off like that.

elliedragon · 23/04/2007 16:00

She is very sleepy but she has been feeding and hasn't been sick.

Ellie, what was your dd's temperature the last time you took it?

elliedragon · 23/04/2007 16:08

When I was at the docs, they read it as 38. Mine seems to say 37.2 now but was about 37.4 last night when I thought she felt hot. I don't usually go too much on temperature readings as can usually tell on my other children.

Hmmm, it's a hard one - I know what you mean ! I was recently told by a Dr that generally a temp. of 38 is cause for slight concern in young babies, or 39+ in older children, so if it was me I'd be tempted to go back to the GP in view of her age.

I assume you've tried the usual methods of cooling her down and they've not worked.

elliedragon, any news on your dd?

elliedragon · 24/04/2007 09:10

I took her back to the gp and they just said try and get a urine sample (very easy!) and go back on Wednesday. She seems a little bit better today and I wonder if she may be getting a cold. Poor little thing.

They put a little plastic bag over my ds1s willy when he was in hospital to catch a wee sample. Not sure how you do this with a little girl.

elliedragon · 24/04/2007 09:41

You have to sick this bag over her bits but it doesn't seem to catch it. It just sticks really hard to everything but around her bum, so wee just comes out. Then it hurts like mad when you peel it off.
