I went below 12 and was told to be carefuil - god is yours really 5!!!!

Hang on will have a look for something.

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 14:49

That is what I have just been told

The GP saw me last week about something different and said I looked aneamic and wanted me to have blood test

The surgery have just rung and told me that he has written prescription for me to have iron

and then I have another test in 2 months

I asked receptionist what mine were and she said do you mean red blood count I said yes and she said 5

Is that the same thing?

I do get faint if I stand for long time and am very tired

Blimey!!!!!!!!!!

But I eat veg and red meat

this is good but doesn't give levels

thirtysomething · 23/04/2007 14:49

I agree - if haemoglobin is 5 you are very, very anemic. I was considered very anemic at 10. But is it the haemoglobin count you're referring to? other things such as B12 and ferritin are measured too to check for anemia. I'm not sure what normal counts for those are. Have you been asked to go back to the GP?

Piffle · 23/04/2007 14:50

rtkm
go to Boots and buy spatone - ironised mineral water you add to OJ - abosrbed easily no nasty side effects
iron supps (ferrous sulphate) make you constipated
5 is very low.

percypig · 23/04/2007 14:52

5 is really low, are you sure it wasn't something point 5? GPs generally put you on iron tablets for anything below 10, sometimes (eg in pregnancy) for anything below 12.

I was slightly anaemic throughout last pregnancy and after having ds went down to 6 - had to have iron infusion s or a blood transfusion. I was an awful colour, fainted in the shower, v fast hear rate, woke up with racing heart in night etc

mrsjohnsimnelcake · 23/04/2007 14:53

check whether or not you mean reb cell values or haemoglobin values, googlzx iwty
gsaorrty zzzz ds2 at keyboard or i would do it for you

percypig · 23/04/2007 14:54

Also, if it really was 5, I think they'd monitoring it more frequently than in 2 months time - I had to have my blood checked every week/fortnight for about 2 months after going down to 6.

I'd phone the surgery and ask for clarification about the results,

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 14:59

oke doke

I am going to ring up to ask for clarification

The thing is that last Thursday when I had blood taken I was told that I HAD TO RING THEM NOT them ring me

And I wasn't to do it until Thursday this week

SO the GP has obviously said that it is urgent for them to ring me iyswim

Oke doke so when I ring what do I exactly ask

ie what result am I wanting the answer to as it was a full blood count so I want to make sure I get proper result.

My GP has now retired and so I have now been moved onto his replacement - so it will be a different GP

Dimpled · 23/04/2007 14:59

can't find a chart ANYWHERE!

Reading this again I can't believe that we are talking haemoglobin levels if yours is 5 and they said to come back in 2 months - you would be offered a blood transfusion.

Can you call the surgery for clarification - can't think this is right.

Dimpled · 23/04/2007 15:00

X-posts!

Good lcuk!

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 15:17

Oke doke I rang up and spoke to the same recptionist

She is going to get GP to ring me later

She apologised profusely for giving the result to me over the phone as she is now medically qualified - I said that was ok as I had asked her to look it up and knew she wasn't qualified etc.

She said there were lots of results/numers on the screen

So I wiill wait for the GP to ring me later

Thanks guys for your help

I will let you know what he says

I will send DH to BOOTS when he gets home to get drink

Haemoglobin of 5 equals admission to hospital and transfusion. Cannot be right, she must have made a mistake. you would be extremely breathless and falling over all the time if it was 5.

If you are taking iron, do not drink tea or coffee at the same time - it stops you absorbing it. Take it with orange juice or water, take vitamin c tablets as well, and eat an orange every time you take your iron because they do make you constipated. TBH if you are really anaemic anything you buy over the counter isn't going to be enough to get your blood count back up.

Iron tablets are extremely damgerous for children - fatal if overdosed, so keep them well out of reach.

Hope you get to speak to GP soon. The important thing is to find out why you are anaemic. Abnormal bleeding??

HTH

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 16:26

I do get breathless but thought that was cos I am fat

I have PCOS and heavy periods so that is prob why

I am sure it was wrong result but am still wondering cos otherwise why did they ring me today rather than wait for me to ring them on Thursday

They never ring patient unless there is a problem afaik

So the ones on presciption are stronger????

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 16:27

oh and I don't drink tea or coffee anyway so that is ok

Will get some oranges and orange juice from tesco

will kiwi be ok to eat as I prefer to eat them rather than oranges

Twiglett · 23/04/2007 16:30

under 11 and I get put on iron tablets

noddyholder · 23/04/2007 16:31

5 is very low i have been that low and was transfused.Have also had transfusionjs at around 7.

Twiglett · 23/04/2007 16:32

don't think she gave you the right figure Kanga ..

Twiglett · 23/04/2007 16:32

spatone from Boots

or flouradix from health store

are both excellent for boosting iron gently (ie no constipation)

3littlefrogs · 23/04/2007 16:33

Yes - whatever fruit you like that is rich in Vit.C and roughage. From the symptoms you have described i would guess maybe your Hb is around 9.5. Once you get below 10, you start to get breathless and tired. However - you can have a reasonable Hb but low ferratin - blood tests are complicated to interpret. There are different sorts of anaemia and it is not only the iron levels and cell counts that are important, but what the cells look like under the microscope as well. So you really need to have a chat with the GP. But there is no way that a doctor would simply put you on iron if your Hb was 5 - he would be sending you to hospital.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 23/04/2007 16:33

Normal red cell count is 4.5 x 10/L

After the 10 in the above line there should be a 12 in superscript. But I can't do superscript on here and it won't copy from Word.

Just got that out of my big midwifery textbook and not entirely sure what it means

But it is different from a HB level. Your Hb level (iron) must be low and thats why the gp wants you to be on iron.

Dimpled · 23/04/2007 16:34

kiwi is great for vit C
