I wish he would ring but now I have to wait until end of surgery tonight

I haven't spoken or met this GP before - wish it was my old one cos he would have rung straight away at lunchtime

Weird that I still can't find a chart of values etc though

Why isn't there one out there???

ok

if

Normal red cell count is 4.5 x 10/L

If mine was 5 x 10/L then I would NOT be aenemic would I?

So it can't be that result could it?

buktus · 23/04/2007 16:42

Normal haemoglobin ranges in men are 14-18 g/dL (grams per decilitre) and in women 12-16 g/dL. This should only be used as a guide as 'normal' can vary from person to person. Your doctor will be able to determine the level which is normal for you.

3littlefrogs · 23/04/2007 16:44

He will probably tell you your haemaglobin. He will also be able to tell you if it is a simple iron deficiency anaemia due to very heavy periods, or if there is anything else in the blood test that suggests another problem. I am sure it must be the former, because of what you have said, and the fact that he is not proposing further investigations, but rather, is putting you on a therapeutic dose of iron and retesting in a couple of months. Try not to worry - it is a common problem. The heavy periods and PCOS might need review by Gynaecologist if you haven't already been referred.

buktus · 23/04/2007 16:45

Hemoglobin (Hb). The amount of hemoglobin in a volume of blood. Hemoglobin is the protein molecule within red blood cells that carries oxygen and gives blood its red color. Normal range for hemoglobin is different between the sexes and is approximately 13 - 18 grams per deciliter for men and 12 - 16 for women (international units 8.1 - 11.2 millimoles/liter for men, 7.4 - 9.9 for women).
perhaps the last little bit is where the get the 5 from
i have pcos too it is a pain in the bum do they treat yours how regulalry do they scan and stuff

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 16:57

Thanks guys

I haven't had a scan for years I had an MRI that showed up little white circles on what I think is my ovaries - MRI was on my back but one film showed my pelvis iyswim

my old GP put me on MEDROXYPROGESTERONE to control the bleeding but I ran out of them

They do work though but not if you don't take them

This thread is very interesting. I have been wondering for a little while if I am aneamic.I have the symptoms very very tired, getting dizzy, breathless...I should book a docs appointment but I just can't be bothered. I'm too tired!! I was anaemic last year with low b12 levels as well. I got some of that water stuff from boots but keep forgtting to take it! Anyway I'll make an appointment I suppose. Hope you feel better soon RTKM! Hope it's not as bad as you think!

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 18:44

I was feeling like cr*p a few weeks ago and asked for a test - midwife did it as I'm Pg - she rang and said yes, you're at 9 so need to take iron - I already was taking it as I knew the feeling from last Pg. I use Fersamal syrup - a bit sickly but better than the tab, much easier to absorb and doesn't make you constipated .
You can buy it for about a fiver from the chemist, or get a prescription.
Btw 9 isn't that low - anything under 10 they don't like you to have a home birth - but last Pg I was actually around 7.9 and didn't feel much worse than I did at 9.
They did tell me I'd need a transfusion if it hit 7 though so I very much doubt your haemoglobin is 5 or they'd be onto you to get admitted/injections/etc.
As PP said, results are complex to read, variables are things like mean cell value (between 80 & 100 I think is normal - I sneaked a look at mine and it was 89, even with low haemo.) So I hope your GP can reassure you. I might have got all this wrong but just what I think.
Don't worry, it is very common.

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 19:32

He still hasn't phoned

I don't think he will do now. Do you?

Not a good 1st impression to give when you have just joined the practise is it?

OP posts:
RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 19:34

DS had the syrup when he came home from NNU ITU

flightattendant · 23/04/2007 20:08

What a pain. But I do think you'd know about it if it was 5...you would be in serious difficulty doing everyday stuff IMO.
Try ringing them in the morning?

wrinklytum · 23/04/2007 20:25

Hi,RT I work on a haematology ward, and can assure you that if your haemaglobin level was only 5 then you would have been rushed into hospital pretty speedily to undergo various tests, and be topped up with blood. You probably would be extremely breathless, dizzy and weak and felt like total crap.I can only think that the receptionist has accidentally read the wrong blood value off the results slip.I would suggest you ring GP in the morning to clarify matters HTH,Wrinkly.

SquillosMum · 23/04/2007 20:32

I have just got some Full Blood Count test results back with all the "normal" ranges. Not sure what all the abbreviations mean, but here they are for you:
