All welcome - for anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat, so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss, but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information here (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

Hello everyone! I have had an ok day: coconut, raisons, homemade watercress soup, banana, sprouts, broc, peas, apple. actually thats pretty rubbish! must make a fruit salad tomorrow, i eat loads when thats sat in my fridge!! Well done everyone else!

gscrym · 23/04/2007 20:19

Well today I've had some some dried fruit, a couple of oranges and a huge bowl of stir-fried veg with some curry sauce and a lot less chicken than I usually have. Nowhere near where I should be I'm sure but I've only just started and I was on nights last night so have spent a chunk of the day sleeping.

I'm off to have another rummage through the fruit bowl. I've got some peppers, carrots, onions and tomatoes bubbling away in the slow cooker for tomorrow to have as soup.

Also, the protein thing, that's probably what I'd struggle with. I'm not keen on beans and I don't like nuts. I'll just have to learn to love them I suppose.

Suzycreamcheese, you say my name G-scrym. I should really buy a vowel.

FrannyandZooey · 23/04/2007 20:22

Sarz that doesn't sound rubbish to me - I bet the watercress soup was a few portions anyway

Here's some rhubarb facts - thrilling - but don't eat the leaves apparently

Suzy I am sorry, I didn't mean to imply your crumble recipe was not perfect - just I am a bit of a dunce in the baking dept and needed VERY basic instructions. I really liked the sound of your crumble mixture with oats, and the ginger in with the rhubarb. Also like the Tolkienesque middle oven I am going to try a combination of that and Overrun's recipe tomorrow. Wish I'd got some cream now...

Nappies you have our admiration and sympathy

Avi your food always sounds so wholesome and seasonal

I am saying "Jee scrim" in my head. Is that right? And can Ash count a two minute knee trembler as her 10 mins exercise? I think not...

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 23/04/2007 20:24

aha I was right

but very very slow composing my post....

Jeescrim do you like hummus? Or a lot of us hide lentils in things, usually soups

OP posts:
gscrym · 23/04/2007 20:30

Franny, I've never had hummus, I'll have to give it a go so I'll see if I can get a little tub tomorrow.

I've just redone my Tesco order to remove the naughty butter toffee cookies and put on another couple of bags of dried fruit.

Mash the taties and have with veg sausages

oh and jerusalem artichokes. WTF to do with those? They make us all blow up like balloons, in fact, I may have to give them away

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 23/04/2007 20:38

FJ you are uber exerciser [awe]

and selfless too - swimming! God I loathe it

OP posts:
Fillyjonk · 23/04/2007 20:40

god swimming is vile

and cold

am not uber exceriser, the running nearly killed me. note it is interval running

and I had to do most of it to the sodding classic fm magazine christmas cd special, cos i acidentally started the music in the wrong place and then managed to lose my mp3 player down my bra

arf at MP3 player in the bra

you see you are just showing off

you could lose bugger all in my bra

Avi yes but then it would be HUGE. And I was going to put the psb in, do you think it won't be nice?

I remember last time we had fartichokes we were up in the night - in pain. Seriously. We vowed never again and then here they are in the fridge.

OP posts:
gscrym · 23/04/2007 20:46

There was one of those grow your own veg prgrams where they made chips from jerusalem artichokes. Might not be very healthy though.

ok have problem re trainers, need help

mine i got from a running shop, cos i did in the past run a fair bit

they will have been made by orphans in the majority world

wtf can one do here? decent running shoes are a necessity IMO, and any old trainers won't do unless you want dodgy knees.

thoughts

(hi avi btw, i bloody must email you, it is a treat for me to do that, see). note am not actually here am really sorting lide insurance (oooh)

SauerKraut · 23/04/2007 20:58

Janey nora, you all make my fruit and veg for today sound boring, what with artichokes and pomegranates and whathaveyou! Here goes- banana, raisins, dates, apple, lettuce, carrot, 2 pears, peas and green beans, tomatoes. Told you! Made 10, though.
I love rhubarb like this- stewed in chunks with the juice of an orange, a little ground ginger, handful of raisins (then you don't need sugar at all) and chopped walnuts.
For exercise I have been on a 39 min stonk round the forest with loads of uphill- I jogged most of the way back.

SauerKraut · 23/04/2007 21:00

You can get Nordic Walking trainers with gel in- against joint damage- which are also great for running.

Fillyjonk · 23/04/2007 21:01

are they fairtrade?

Filly dp is the king of fair trade clothes in our house (I am NOT as you know ) and he says that New Balance do some running shoes made in Britain

or Patagonia do outdoorsy types of shoes made from recycled rubber etc but he says the waiting list is a total bugger

OP posts:
SauerKraut · 23/04/2007 21:02

I don't know if mine are, but Nordic Walking is The Thing here, so I wouldn't be surprised if you could get fairtrade ones.
