eye pain swollen and bloodshot

I woke in the night with a sharp pain in my eye. I rubbed it and it was very itchy and slightly sore. I know not to rub excessively so left it as much as possible. I woke this morning to a swollen eyelid (over the spot that had the pain) and one side of the eye is bloodshot.
I have dry eyes but this is different.
I dont want to bother an optician - any idea if this will just go away on its own without treatment?

It would make sense to see an optician.
They have the correct equipment to look in your eye and will advise if you need to be seen anywhere else.

Could you have a stye? I had something similar and had a stye on the inside of my eyelid

Definitely go see an optician for an emergency appointment
I had an eye infection a few weeks back and I was prescribed an ointment which helped within a day - better than any OTC drops!
It got rid of the horrible foreign object feeling!

It sounds like the symptoms of conjunctivitis. Check with a doc.

Maybe youve scratched your eyeball. I did that once and it hurt like hell!
