Phoned about repeat blood tests the day after I had some.

Had 3 vials of blood taken yesterday - GP wanted to do full bloods as I’ve got a number of different symptoms. Receptionist just rang back today to say I need to repeat them on Monday and then see the GP for a review 5 days later. Bit worried... why should they ask me to repeat them so soon? I asked the receptionist but she says there was nothing written down.

Could be that they weren’t taken correctly/contaminated in some way or not picked up in time. Honestly wouldn’t worry too much although it’s a pita.

Quite ofen need to phone patients to repeat bloods, can be something as simple as the samples not being picked up in time (can’t be left overnight) or using the wrong tube

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/11/2017 16:22

The things that can go wrong

Wrong tubes used
Samples handled incorrectly when taken
Samples labelled incorrectly
Tubes broken at collection site
Blood clotted in tube
Tubes not collected on time
Tubes damaged in transit
Tubes damaged at lab
Tubes mishandled and contaminated at lab
Samples run incorrectly
Machine broken whilst running sample
Mix up with which patient is which tube at lab

As you can see many many reasons why repeat sampling may need to occur.

That’s reassuring thanks. They were running very behind at the surgery on Thursday and said they’d had a computer glitch in the morning, so that’s probably it.

When I have had Re draw it’s always been because there was something wrong with the amount drawn or once one smashed and all six got binned ( pre eclampsia so I have them twice daily at one point) so much can be wrong for the lab to just reject them.
Try not to worry

Hmmm - elevated liver function and high rheumatoid factor. Blood tests were further liver tests. Trying not to worry...
