I'm deaf from one ear and the other ear was blocked so I went have it looked at. The nurse said I had impacted wax in my ear so she syringed it for me. It's like she did nothing. She said it was going to take 24-48 hours to have my hearing back but I can't help panicking. Any experience ?

I had impacted ear wax a few years ago and it was basically so impacted that only the first "layer" came out with syringing. No improvement in hearing at all. I kept putting in the olive oil and the rest eventually softened and came loose after about a week.

It's really horrid, I know, OP. Much sympathy.

Changerofname987654321 · 24/11/2017 17:46

Did you loosen it with olive oil in the week before it was syringed? If not then there will still be more wax in there.

Try putting warm olive oil in your ear twice a day for 20 mins.

Soupoftheday1975 · 24/11/2017 17:52

No change. I did ear candling but no olive oil.

If no olive oil, it may just be that there's lots of hard wax which wasn't shifted by syringing. I know oil makes it worse in the short term (unless 100% blocked already) but it really is worth it. Might take a week or two if it's really impacted.

Honestly the olive oil is amazing. If my ear is starting to become blocked I just do the olive oil thing and it is sorted out.

I am surprised that the nurse would syringe it without you using olive oil first.

I experienced this twice before. Once, all of the wax didnt come out because the wax was still hard . Second time, she got all of the wax out but there was quite a bit of water still in my ear.

Give it a day or two. Try not to worry.

If you are happy to pay for it, you could have it microsuctioned - Clear Ear clinic will do it. You don't need to have used oil but it does help. They should be able to remove it all and it's safer than syringing. I feel for you, it's horrible.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/11/2017 18:07

I did ear candling but no olive oil.

Ear candling is a (dangerous) scam and does fuck all.

hollygolipo · 25/11/2017 18:13

True - you're more likely to end up with a burnt ear or candle wax in it. Total waste of money...

CurlsLDN · 25/11/2017 18:49

As someone who is also prone to impacted wax, infections, burst eardrums etc I would also recommend a private appointment for microsuction, it’s amazing!

Please read up on ear candling, it has been proven to be no benefit, actively dangerous, and nothing to do with the Hopi people! I read earlier this week that the Hopi people have an ongoing legal battle with the company that makes the ear candles trying to get them to stop calling them that.

This nurse should not have syringed your ear without you using olive oil or similar twice a day for at least 3 days beforehand.
You need to discuss this with your practice manager it’s a really daft thing to do. He/she could have damaged your ear drum.
Was the procedure painful? It’s probably more likely that she was unable to remove the wax and it’s just stil in there.
The idea of putting the oil in is that it makes the ear wax soft and gloopy, the jet of water then builds up a little pressure behind it but because it’s gloopy it squeezes out through your ear hole!
If the wax is just hard it will simply rattle around in there or, worse, the pressure builds up behind it and it pops out the other way through your ear drum.

berliozwooler · 27/11/2017 05:52

At my surgery you have to use warm olive oil for a week before syringing.

nooka · 27/11/2017 06:10

My ds had to have his ears syringed twice before they cleared. He told me that the nurse said he had honeycomb wax which I assume is harder than normal. He had to put drops in for five days before each time it was syringed so I'm also pretty surprised that the OP didn't get the same advice. You can use mineral oil (from the chemist) or olive oil OP, lie on the other side and carefully drip the oil in with a syringe (which you can also get from a chemist). It's easiest if you can get someone else to do it for you.

Ive had micro suction on my ears and my right ear is still blocked, well I can't hear properly out of it? Went to the nurse said my ear is clear and ear drum in tact. Try steam, cleared yesterday, blocked today can't hear a thing from my right ear, any suggestions please, would be grateful...

Misha987 · 08/08/2018 22:15

Had my ear syringed today. My right ear is still completely blocked. Nurse told me if it don't clear up, call back and they will refer me to eye, ear and throat clinic. When I asked how long should it take before I start seeing improvement.... She told me 6 months. Does that sound normal?

Opsy · 27/11/2019 14:21

Had my ear syringed then had a ear infection and a week later still feels like i have water in my ear and it keeps crackling and poping

Nightswimmer80 · 04/06/2022 16:30

I've had a similar problem, had my left ear microsuctioned almost four weeks ago, it blocked up and I'm left with muffled hearing on that side and feeling a bit unbalanced.. The stress of it all has stopped me eating and I've lost almost a stone in weight since and now I can't sleep properly!! I don't suppose anyone else has had a problem with microsuction but I would say it's not risk free!!!

Mindymomo · 04/06/2022 18:49

@Nightswimmer80 My DH has had microsuction but he has a perforated eardrum which does sometimes cause him to have vertigo.

Keyloyal · 27/04/2024 17:28

Hello 👋🏾 so after they removed the wax it took 6 days for your hearing to come back after syringing ????
