DS has inflatable willy when he wees, will it cause future problems?

Just starting potty training my ds, 2.4.
Have noticed that when he does a wee, his willy inflates like a balloon on the end, presume it's from a backup of pressure when the wee is coming out really quickly to start off with! dh says his doesn't do this and MIL says it didn't when he was little either. Is this something we should worry about? It doesn't bother ds but concerned that as he grows it might be a problem.
Has anyone else come across this?

Have you only recently noticed it ? iirc, if sudden, it can be a symptom of an underlying condition (is it called balanitis?) which if not treated, can lead to a nasty infection. Worth a trip to gp as a tight foreskin can be simply treated with a cream.

It's not a recent thing, have noticed it before if he's weed in the bath or something when it also floats which looks really funny
But although its not recent (happened for at least a year), it hasn't always done it- def didn't when a tiny baby. I suppose that because I see him weeing more now I have been worrying about it.

Califrau's ds had this - went to see a willy specialist, was suggested he might have a circumcision at some point but in the end it wasn't necessary. I would take him to GP to get a referral

Both my boys' willies do this but it only balloons up a little bit at the start of a wee and then goes down. never considered that it might be a problem as i thought it was normal and it doesn't seem to cause them pain.

flightattendant · 16/04/2007 13:42

My Ds's does the same thing, he's 3.11, I never considered it might be anything but normal!

DrNortherner · 16/04/2007 13:45

My ds is 5 and his does this too. I thought ir was nornal....

This can be caused by a tight foreskin - ds2 had this problem. We were referred to a surgeon (re possible circumcision) but the surgeon said he would grow out of it. You can have problems with infections so you need to watch out for that.

hoolagirl · 16/04/2007 14:14

Oooer, my ds's does this as well, doesn't seem to be causing any problems as far as I can tell, hes just over 2.

is it the tip or the base? My ds's also swells (more at the base) before he wees, that's how I know he's about to and to get the nappy on quick.

Tatat · 16/04/2007 20:18

Lio, lol at a willy specialist, wonder if it says that on his business card

It inflates at base first then the end, from everyone's helpful responses I think my course of action will be to make sure it is kept nice and clean (without pulling the foreskin back of course) and wait and see over the next few years. Thanks everyone who has responded to put my mind at rest.

I remember being amazed when I noticed DS wee for the first time - his inflates too.
