have they actual taken swabs for bacterial infections and sent them off or just STI's

Sometimes stale semen can smell a bit, is it right after ejaculation or a few hours later? Just make sure you take a bath/shower as soon as you can afterwards, then possibly again a couple of hours later.

There are a number of infections which can cause smells, some of them don't come under the banner of STIs - including BV, which is bacterial.
