Thumb sucking mummy

I am preparing myself for a barrage of abuse here but I really need to know what people think - I am a mother of two (a toddler and a 6 month old) and I still suck my thumb. Yes, I do it in front of them and I am considering seeing a hypnotherapist to try and stop. The problem is, I'm not sure i want to - I just know that I will be mortified when my toddler is able to tell strangers that his mum sucks her thumb at home (I never do it in public). Thoughts please

No words of wisdom, but just to say I still do too and I have a DS who is 3.

I even have to admit that i do it in public when caught off guard. I have been told often at work (emergency doctors) to get it out too!

I don't want to stop doing it and get very protective when challenged about it- I don't take drugs, smoke, rob people etc. my vice is sucking my thumb. I'm not hurting anyone. 'Oh, and my teeth are fine thankyou very much and I've been doing it 27 years!'

geekgrrl · 11/04/2007 18:59

can you tell me whether it has affected your teeth? My dd1 is still an avid thumbsucker at nearly 8 and I'm torn between taking drastic measures (thumb guard etc) and just leaving her alone.

Hi Geekgirl. sorry, i didn't login over the weekend. no, it hasnt' affected my teeth at all.

Thanks Novacane. glad to hear I'm not the only one. actually I did a bit more searching on the internet after posting this, and found a site all for adult thumb suckers (ATS for short!) I think you're right - it's not doing anyone any harm, after all. Just might be embarassing for the kids when they're older

hiya

just to let you know that my sister also still sucks her thumb (35) and her 15 month old also does. Her teeth are fine too.

MissGolightly · 16/04/2007 10:35

My SIL still has a comforter blanket and seems to be a normal well adjusted adult with perfectly fine teeth!

I don't think there is anything wrong with you thumbsucking, but I have to admit that in your shoes I would probably try not to do it in front of the kids. They are too young to find it weird now, but there will come a time when they comment on it and may get teased themselves.

My sister still sucks thumb at 42, great teeth, none of her children have folloed suit.

Celery · 16/04/2007 12:40

I'm 32 and a thumbsucker. Only one of my three children sucks theirs ( I'm secretly thrilled I finally got a thumb sucker! ) I do it because it feels lovely, very soothing. Teeth are fine.

I would still have my comforter at 31 if I didn't suspect DH of throwing it out when we came home from hospital with our first baby 2 years ago.
I always told him that it would be a divorceable offence - and was only partlly joking- but he denies it and I still long for a quick kutch with it now! Put my hand under the pillow in the midle of the night and still feel disappointed when its not there

lizziemun · 16/04/2007 13:44

My BIL sucked his thumb until a few years ago then he suddenly stopped. He is in his mid 30's, his teeth are ok, neither me or my sister sucked our thumbs but both of us had to wear braces to straighten them.

I have to my mum has just thrown her pillow out which she has had since she was a baby, she is now 58 and she is a normal as she can be.

scoobydoo99 · 16/04/2007 13:54

My Mum sucked her thumb (though only at home) all her life. I certainly didn't go around telling everyone when I was a child as I really didn't see it as anything worth mentioning. It was only when I was a teenager I realised it was maybe a bit unusual and we used to tease her a bit, but certainly no big deal. I really wouldn't worry about it at all. My Mum's teeth were fine, by the way.

I suck my thumb and I beleive that as a result I have no fillings (ok only 1 but I only had it done last year and I'm 36). No problems with teeth either.
